New Helloween out today

Dude, if that's the case, they're the worst-named band in metal. Let's just say there are a thousand Helloween wannabes out there, but few come close. On a good day, Stratovarius; on a not-so-cheesy day, Hammerfall... to name just a couple. Melodic, anthemic, uptempo German metal at it's finest. The unique thing about Helloween has always been their lyrical slant. No devil/drugs/killyourparents/cookie monster vocals here. Very positive message which is a nice change after a hard day of Opeth or Slayer, or whatever. Some find it corny, but I respect their integrity. The lineup's undergone some changes on recent albums, but they've always been about quality. Start with a vintage classic, 1987's 'Keeper Of The Seven Keys pt.1'. From there, you have some choices... 'Walls Of Jericho' is full-on melodic speed metal (their full-length debut). On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is the 'Chameleon' album, which most people hate. Thing is, it's actually a collection of 'solo' material; four individual members wrote their own songs with no tinkering by the others, then threw them altogether. The variety and scope is awesome, though it's not difinitive of their whole band sound. There's also two 'best of' collections, 'The Best, The Rest, The Rare', spanning the first 5 years or so, and the more recent 'Treasure Chest', which includes works up through their previous album a couple years ago. If you can find the Japanese version, there's a third disc included of unreleased B-side tracks that are all killer! Finally, if you dig Helloween, you'll find they are some of the more prolific writers and players in the scene. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 CD's either from Helloween, or featuring present and former members of the band-- guest spots, solo albums, etc.

Enjoy-
