Origin of a Sound

So I was listening to PTO Volition and Disperse Living Mirrors the other day (as well as Haken's Mountain) and aI could help but reflect on wondering what inspired these kinds of music.

There were times where I would absolutely hear things that reminded me of Cynic (intricate guitar and fast drums over steady/smooth vox) or the influence of King Crimson (thank you Robert Fripp).

I was wondering though, what do metal fans see as the progression of bands through history for this style of prog/music?
