Awesome thread, man.

Not in any real order, by the way.

1) Opeth- Blackwater Park (my first real metal album, that got me into the European scene and eventually led to my passion. I must say, it scared the shit out of me the first time I heard it. Good thing I didn't listen to Marduk or something first).

2) Vintersorg- Till Fjalls (my first experience with Folk/Viking metal, and here I am in a folk metal band obsessed with the genre)

3) Vintersorg- Cosmic Genesis (showed me how epic and beautiful music can be)

4) Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (my first black metal album. Not much else to say, I was totally mystified by it)

5) Ulver- Bergtatt (again, showed me pure beauty and diversity)

6) In Flames- The Jester Race (It explains itself.. a melodic masterpiece)

7) Dark Tranquillity- Haven (Being the ignorant fool I was before getting into this type of music, I thought music with keyboards sucked unconditionally. I was wrong.)

8) Danzig- Danzig (Helped me respect traditional styles of metal/hard rock a lot more)

9) Black Sabbath (the same as above, one of my absolute favorite bands of all time. I love all of their stuff.)

10) Dissection- Storm of the Light's Bane (actually.. I could say that this was maybe my first Blackish metal CD. Needless to say, I was blown away by it. I'd never heard anything similar to it throughout my entire life).

Sorry for the meaningless explanations.

Tough one, I'm sure I'll forget a few, lets see....

Iron Maiden - Live after Death: the most important, because it got me into metal

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I: At first I loved Maiden and nothing else, until I listened to Helloween

Dark Tranquility - Damage Done: I hated death vocals until I listened to this, it had a huge impact because it opened a whole new world of great bands, melodic death, black, even some trash

Agalloch - The Mantle: This album is so good, I'd never heard anything like this before.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness: First time I heard of it I thought it'd be boring, I mean, how can someone write a 60 minute song without it sounding repetitive... WRONG!

Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy: Awesome, I thought I was going to become a big prog metal fan, but then I found out Symphony X is an exception in a sea of bands with no song writing talent

Evergrey - In Search of Truth: The voice of Tom englund, the creative use of piano and the overall dark sound of this band makes them my second favorite.

Opeth - Still Life: I chose Still Life because it was my first Opeth album, but it could've been Morningrise, or Blackwater Park, this band is so good, took me a while to truly appreciate the beauty of their music.

Savatage - Streets: Criss Oliva is one of my favorite guitar players, that combined with the piano and voice of Jon makes Savatage and awesome band. Streets is my favorite from them.

I heard many of these albums for the first time at different points in my life (I've been listening to metal for 15 years), and they therefore had different effects on me. Nowadays, I don't consider some of the old albums masterpieces, though they did play a big role in the development of my metal taste.

Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (though I actually didn't like it at first listen)

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Sepultura - Arise (the first album will all "unclean" vocals I got into, a step up in extremity)

Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
Cynic - Focus
Decapitated - Winds of Creation
Orphaned Land - Mabool
Miles Davis - The Bitches Brew set

Blind Guardian: Nightfall in Middleearth
My first real metal album;
Showed me that real metal is not at all like Limp Bizkit and new Metallica.
Also showed me, that powermetal can be really good in some cases (though i did not know the term powermetal back then)

Borknagar: Empiricism
My first album with unclean vocals.
Showed me a first glimpse in the direction of viking and black metal (though imo it does not belong to any of both genres).

Ulver: Bergtatt
Showed me that primitive music can be really beautyfull (because if you ignore the folk stuff it is primitive black metal). Got me REALLY interrested in black metal.
Also showed me, how intense an atmosphere can be created by music.

Burzum: Burzum/Aske
I cannot describe in what way, but this album changed my way to think about music, definitely - when i first really got into the album, after i had found it rather boring for some time

Jesus Christ Superstar (OST): First music I ever listened to. Still love it.
Queen- A Night At the Opera: First hard-rock I listened to. Still rocking.
Bad Religion- All Ages: First album I actually bought. The only punk band I have albums of. Still like them a lot.
Tool- Lateralus/Aenima (bought them at the same time): Path to other Prog and other Metal. Still one of my favourites bands.
Iron Maiden- Brave New World: First Maiden album I bought. They continue to be my favourite band.
Blind Guardian- Nightfall in Middle Earth: Started loving powermetal
Angra- Rebirth: Loved powermetal even more.
Opeth- Blackwater Park: Started liking more "extreme" metal. Awesome album.
In Flames- Reroute to Remain: I admit it, this one actually got me started liking the other stuff. Don't like it that much anymore, though.
Dream Theater- Loved virtuoso power-prog ever since.

Wow, same here. Not the only punk band I own CDs by, but the only one I still listen to (though I've had my eye on Minor Threat's "Complete Discography" for a while now.)
