i cant believe only one other person mentioned jeff waters.some annihilator stuff sucks but he shreds like a motherfucker.that first aibum alice in hell just rips guitar wise.shame about randy rampage though.

Waters to me was always mediocre at best. He doesn't excite me & the fact that he can't settle on a line up for his band? That's insane. He's had some great singers in the past.

fHere are some of mine:

Randy Rhoads
Zakk Wylde
Mikael Akerfeldt
Peter Lindgren
Michael Amott
Christopher Amott
Dimebag
James Hetfield (Riff God!)
Jimmy Page
Chuck Schuldiner
Tony Iommi (Father of Riff God!)
Vivian Campbell (for his brilliant work on Holy Diver)
Doug Aldrich
Dave Linsk
Derek Tailer
Jon Schaeffer
Adam Jones
Eric Peterson
Kerry King (riff writing)
Jeff Hanneman (also for riffs)

The cliche goes there was Hendrix the came along Eddie Van Halen. His influence on hard rock metal guitar can not be overstated. He basically reinvented the instrument and it was just not tapping. Harmonics and his amazing use of effects and his superb rhythm guitar playing.

Hetfield's right hand defined thrash metal for a generation. A true metal classic musician despite recent output.

Jimmy Page and his use of multitrack recording techniques tends also to get lost.
He was never a shredder ( but check out some of the latest DVD and you will be surprised).

Allan Holdsworth defined the legato sound.

Malmsteen- I hate his songwriting but hey he was the man for a short while.

Randy Rhoads

The guy from Coroner what's his name awesome guitar player.

Tommy Baron from Coroner (well, I think that's his name)

Bill Steer

Paul Masvidal

Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore, John Sykes, Impellitteri, Andy Southwell & Dave Martin, K.K. Downing & Glenn Tipton etc.

There is just too many but avobe is basically I really like.

It's good to see plenty of Nugent fans running around here. Didn't think he would be too popular on a metal board.

So onto the list:

Criss Oliva
Dave Murray
Eddie Van Halen
John Petrucci
Chuck Shuldiner
Dave Mustaine
Kai Hansen
Mark Briody
Gary Rossington
Ted Nugent
Angus Young
Alex Lifeson

Okay this list is mostly rythym ( <- can never spell this fricken word) players I know but that is what usually grabs my attention is a big heavy fat groovy & loud guitar riff so here goes:

1. Dimebag Darrell
2. Jon Schaffer
3. James Hetfeild (old stuff of course)
4. Kurt Hammett (old stuff of course)
5. Dave Mustaine
6. Marty Friedman
7. Jeff Hanneman
8. Kerry King
9. Zakk Wydle
10. Max Cavalera
11. Andreas Kisser

Lots of good guitar players left out of course but these are the ones that stick out most in my mind.

There are LOTS of guitar players I love, let me see:

Alex Skolnick
Christofer Malmstrom
Jeff Loomis
Allan Holdsworth
Michael Romeo
Jason Becker
Ola Frenning and Peter Wichers
Chuck Schuldiner

And some more that I probably forgot.
