PP USA VIII: Final Band confirmed

I've seen them in 2002 (opening for Nightwish) in Paris and they were excellent.

And what do you mean non-Floor/Floor era ? she's been with them since the beginning.

Glad to hear it; I hate the rare occasions when I go to see a band which has a crappy stage presence.

By the non-Floor/Floor era I'm talking about some of the very early stuff the band (when they were Apocalypse) put out in the years before Floor joined. It was somewhat interesting, but then Floor joined and they changed the name and style completely. It's my opinion that the first couple albums that AF did were pretty bad because they were making such a large shift in style (try comparing Ephemeral to Reimagine and you'll see what I mean).

Basically, I don't appreciate their early stuff as much as I do the later. I assume that with the new album coming out in a few months they'll probably be playing that at PP though.

Myself personally am not a fan of chick singer bands. I mean I do like them in back up vocals but not a whole album of opera's ohhhsss and aawwwss.

You should try to listen to AF first before saying stupid things like that ;) AF ISN'T a band where the whole album is "opera's ohhhss and aawwss" . ANd it's far from being one.......
that's why I LOVE IT

This is a big letdown for me. I am among those who are not into this band, but I can respect people's right to like them, so it's no biggie. I was really hoping that the trend of the seemingly mandatory female fronted band would end this year, but at least the rest of the lineup is strong enough to warrant my attendance. Thanks Glenn for an overall great job!

yeah maybe I dont know enough about them to assume much but I base my opinion on what I've heard. That's cool that you like it maybe I took my comments to far, oh well. I hope you have as much fun at pp fest as I will. ;P

Yeah Floor loosens up her voice most of the time. She definitely doesn't always used the classically trained/operatic vox. That's why I've said that she's better than Tarja, since she can do both! But, she has a stronger, better trained voice than Sharon from WT. Even when I heard Sharon & Tarja do that duet (their styles didn't blend well), they still didn't equal 1 Floor!

I think that I'm going to catch some shit for that post! :p

I mean, I do understand the fact that you don't like female fronted bands..but give AF a try... the most recent stuff... maybe it will surprise you, maybe you will think it's the "same shit" as the others.. lmao
ANd I will have a lot of fun, thanks!!

Totally agree there :) She (Floor) has a very potential voice. Different from that "girlie" voice Sharon has =x (oops sorry about that lol) And of course, a different style from Tarja, BUT as you said, she can do both. Well, I'm a little Floor's "fangirl" I guess lol ;) Oh well, what can I do? She is the only female woman out there I can listen to the whole day and not be annoyed

I cant help feeling a little disappointed in this decision. Im travelling all the way from Australia to the premier progressive and power metal festival in the world basically. I was looking foward to a premier prog or power metal band headlining. After Forever arent really either imo.
Crossover appeal? maybe.
Not prog enough or not power enough for the respective genre fans? more than likely.
Am i still gonna check them out? probably.
Is the festival still gonna kick ass? definately!

Never have quite understood this opinion of not liking female vocal led bands, but then everyone has their opinion. How could they not like Epica last year? I mean, that chick has it together completely. Hell, watch the video of the making of Phantom Agony, We Will Take You With Us. Truly talented professionals in that band, same can be said for After Forever, although I like Epica better. I'm even looking forward to PPs past '07 for the hope of maybe even seeing Within Temptation among others. I like the idea that Glenn has an open mind enough to see and appreciate variations in prog/power metal, and books accordingly. I've always said to see the band live before you blast them, sadly though looks like in this forum people are complaining who've never even heard After Forever's studio albums, especially the past 2. Being narrow minded is boring those around you, so maybe consider expanding your horizons? My girlfriend knows there's a "No Celine Dion Rule" around me, other than that I try to hear as much different music as possible, and amazingly my horizons have expanded alot over the years. Here, check After Forever out, then you decide. AFTER FOREVER OFFICIAL HOMEPAGE

I can't understand not liking female fronted bands either. Too bad humanity hasn't outgrown generalization. Even if you don't like the music or feminine vocals...

Well, it seems that pretty much sums it up right there. I am an old school traditional metalhead that may be narrow minded to some, but I view it as being more refined in their listening. These female vocal led band do nothing for me - in fact, I feel it detracts from the music. There are bands that I like the music but hate the vocals, and for some reason, female vocals and heavy metal will never mix in my opinion. That's just the way I am bro. To each his own I guess.

Thanks to you both for seeing my much-belabored point.

sincerely,
that guy in the Bauhaus shirt

Since you do belabor the point so much, and for the sake of discussion... what exactly constitutes Gothic METAL to you? Not Goth. Not Gothic Music. Not Gothic Rock. Gothic Metal. I'm just curious because most definitions of Gothic Metal generally define it to be a style that emphasizes contrasts by featuring atmospheric keys vs. lower toned bass, and often operatic female (Beauty) vs. male death/black/thrash (Beast) vocals.

Granted what is commonly called Gothic Metal isn't a "Metalized" form of Gothic Rock, and really doesn't resemble Gothic Rock in the way Progressive Metal resembles Progressive Rock. Nor, despite its common name, does Gothic Metal have anything to do with the Gothic lifestyle. Instead Gothic Metal is an unrelated and independantly evolved genre that includes Tristania, Leaves' Eyes, Sirenia, Lacuna Coil, and After Forever. Symphonic can be applied to any genre: Symphonic Power- Rhapsody. Symphonic Black- Cradle Of Filth. Symphonic- Black/Death Dimmu Borgir. I don't think it adequately describes what many call Gothic Metal bands.

In addition After Forever is classified as Gothic/Power Metal by the Encyclopedia Metallum. The Metallum, by the way, is very particular about who they'll even list as a Metal band as well as their genres. They're classified as Gothic Metal by most metal webzines including Metal Reviews, The Metal Observer, Lords Of Metal, Metal-Rules, Metal Storm, and also by Glenn.

No doubt you have a different opinion on the matter, and it could be that all of them and myself are wrong (no sarcasm intended). I'd like to hear/read your perspective.

Thanks for asking. I actually do see a difference between gothic metal and gothic/goth rock. But to me, any music labelled as "gothic" should have a gothic feel to it - a dark, brooding, but still romantic quality. Tristania's "Widows Weeds" is a great axample of an album I'd consider gothic metal. Paradise Lost's albums (through "Icon" at least) and Theatre of Tragedy's releases (until "Musique" or whatever that was) are also good examples. From an atmospheric standpoint, I'd even consider Opeth's albums to be gothic in nature.

And I just don't hear that same gothic quality from bands like After Forever, Within Temptation (playing on my stereo right now, incidentally), or Nightwish. They are all good bands, they just don't sound particularly gothic.

I get defensive about it because I've met some people in the metal community who write those style of bands off as "that crap that goths listen to." Me and you know that gothic metal and the goth "scene" are two different animals, but not all do. I get annoyed at seeing those bands dissed, but I also get annoyed at people's flat-out ignorance about a subculture they know nothing about. But for the most part, my belaboring is meant to be half-comical anyway. I mean, a lot of us have our personal gimmicks ;)

It seems we don't differ as much as I preceived. I agree with you in that I consider Nightwish to be Symphonic Power Metal. Within Temptation I consider Atmospheric/Ambience Metal, not Gothic. I doubt you clicked many of the links in my last post, but this one is mine. As you can see I empathize with your association grievance.

As for After Forever I hear and feel enough Gothic Metal in it to call it such, but I'd say that the Metallum's classification of Gothic/Power is probably a more accurate description. I'd put Epica there too.
