Part Chimp – Chart Pimp & Bring Back The Sound

Part Chimp rock. In the purest sense of the word; they play good old fashioned rock - loud, brash, and with a wry sense of humour. The question do they rock? Well, yes. Yes they do. Debut album Chart Pimp and single Bring Back The Sound show proper back to basics garage noise. Distorted guitars wail, but hold significant melody, and sporadic riffs are highly effective. Under this crashing drums and heavy bass drive the songs along with strong momentum. Occasional guitar solos are suitably distorted and disharmonic. The vocals sometimes feel buried in the mix. Raw and often out of tune singing proves to be just what the music requires, while shouting is occasionally used in heavier moments.

Slightly muddy production furthers the home-made, stripped down feel, while the songs themselves often follow a similar, yet effective, formula. Chart Pimp is just the right length, at a short thirty-five minutes. This is long enough to have impact, yet not so long the music becomes samey. Standout track has to be “Hitler And Jews”, for the lyrics alone (“too many hitlers/not enough jews/too many hippies/stealing my shoes”), which also appears as second track on the Bring Back The Sound single. This single, a non album track, is in a very similar vein.

Part Chimp’s music - while nothing new - is entertaining, and well worth checking out for fans of plain, old fashioned rock. While the “rock revival” seems to have led to an overabundance of such acts, these guys are among the best.

7.5/10
