its all about rhythm and melody. if you have catchy melodies and rhythms, and good phrasing, the music will be good

Hehe.. variation I would say.. a repetitive song is boring :/ well, at least a catchy chorus aint wrong but.. look at Opeth, they aren't that repetitive and have no choruses (not on Morningrise). heh.. well. Opeth only make good songs, learn from them

for me, there can be a lot of things that make up a good metal song. the easier thing for me to post is what makes a BAD metal song.
if you cannot understand the lyrics
if the guitars only play 2 chords, particularly, ones that are very near each other on the scale
if there is a lot of backwards talk and "hail satan" stuff in them
if there are wayyy too many odd time signatures
that's about all i can think of

I think, cheesy lyrics can really kill any song, no matter how good the music is.
