GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1999

You liked the song from Vampires of Black Imperial Blood in the mixtape game bitch. Also, most songs from Remains... were recorded before 1995. It just wasn’t released until 1999.

Black metal songs are on average much better than black metal albums.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the Nox Intempesta album. I actually think there’s a possibility you might like. It’s got plenty of riffs.

Also, I’d personally rather listen to an average black metal album over any Dream Theater that I’ve heard. Horrible band.

Images & Words and Awake are better than any black metal album outside of possibly DMDS. They also have far better riffs.

Not familiar with Nox Intempesta at all but I'll check them out, the 'black/death metal' descriptor on M-A is a good sign.

Let me know what you think of it. It does incorporate quite a bit of blasting which I know you’re not a fan of, but it’s all executed tastefully imo. A few slower, more atmospheric sections are surrounded by onslaughts of sonic violence and savage riffing.

It’s an album I’ve had at 4.5/5 for years but don’t consider a 5/5 and I don’t really know why. There’s very little wrong with it and it’s all executed pretty much flawlessly. Just missing that extra something to make me consider it an all time favourite I guess. Still there aren’t many better examples of black/death that I’ve heard.

Wait, which one? There were three.

Infernal PanDÆMOnium 2000 is the one that I'm talking about, which is an EP created for demo purposes because they planned to put out an album in the same style.

I haven't heard Occult Revelation so I don't know what it sounds like, but my assumption is that it's a similar style. That said, it might be totally different because there isn't much info about it online.

I'd probably like an album in the style of Infernal PanDÆMOnium more than their earlier stuff these days, and that's saying quite a lot. I do hope those unreleased albums see the light of day eventually.

Really? That's surprising. I mean it's pretty good, but it's got nothing on Damnanus Dominum. But perhaps they couldn't really expand on that style.

I found this in an interview with them:

"Damnanus Dominum" surely deals with the Occult, mixed with my own philosophy and belief. I`m definitely into that stuff since I`m 12, so the album is about the true meaning of the Occult: The tenets of opposites! The lyrics are in German and in English, something, that will change with the next CD, where all lyrics will be in your mothertongue. Also the concept will be something different, it will deal with the history of the fallen angels, their empire and the war against the legions of God. It will be 60% based on the written story as within "The Bible" and "The Apocryphs" and the rest percents will be fiction, compared with a science-fictional story. But it will be still very brutal, cold and dark, because some of the lyrics are ready now and they seem to be very unique within our style. We have also four new songs now, which are even more brutal than on "Damnanus Dominum". Our second full length assault will be titled "Aggestum Armageddon", so be prepared for the ultimate high end aggression!"

What do you think of the Die Lieder von Tod und Ewigkeit EP?

I also love how they describe their style as "PURE APOCALYPTIC BLACK/DEATH METAL ADORATION!"

Images and Words is better than 99% of all metal albums

I'm not into the saxophone ballads anymore any I've never loved Metropolis tbh. The four remaining metal songs might all be 99th percentile, however.

1. Mutiilation- Remains of a Ruined, Cursed, and Dead Soul
2. Graveland- Immortal Pride
3. Dream Theater- Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory
4. Nagelfar- Srontgorrth
5. Agalloch- Pale Folklore
6. Opeth- Still Life
7. Edguy- Theater of Salvation
8. Immolation- Failures for Gods
9. Judas Iscariot- Heaven in Flames
10. Paysage d'Hiver- Paysage d'Hiver

Honorable Mentions:
Neurosis- Times of Grace
Marduk- Panzer Division Marduk
Necrophagist- The Onset of Putrefaction
Tristania- Beyond the Veil
Summoning- Stronghold

Funny comp with 2008. That Neurosis album would be #3 if it was released in 2008.

I need to revisit that Paysage D’hiver actually. Forgot about it.

Did you listen to any of the albums I suggested? Thought you’d be a fan of the Lucifugum.

Once each, but need to give them more listens to establish a position on them. This year has 11 albums I have a deep appreciation of, and some of which I’ve been listening to since I got into extreme metal. It was super hard to cut one out (Marduk ultimately got the ax, but barely) so it’s a longshot that a previously unknown album will crack the top 10 in this year. That said, I plan on continuing to listen to them and developing an opinion on them.

Do it. It needs to make more lists. If you don’t like it then I shall be the one putting a hit on your head. Riff after riff of pure savagery. A near perfect example of black/death metal and how to flawlessly integrate both.

Album rips fucking ass. 8.5/10 type album. I'll make sure to heed your recommendations.

Remains... is a fucking classic. I understand how someone wouldnt like it but to say its baffling for it to be over such and such implies some form of objective measurement of quality that doesnt exist.

Now I realize it may sound a little hypocritical given I earlier mentioned how it was laughable to compare Opeth to Children of Bodom, In Flames and later era Megadeth. But the difference is all that shit is gayer than Ricky Martin and Remains, even if you dislike it, is undeniably the real deal fucking misanthropy and self hatred put on tape.

1. Gothic Knights - Kingdom of the Knights
2. Metalium - Millennium Metal: Chapter One
3. Armoured Angel - Angel of the Sixth Order
4. Danzig - Danzig 6:66: Satan's Child
5. Corrupted - Llenandose de Gusanos
6. Fantômas - Fantômas
7. Mercyful Fate - 9
8. Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza
9. Pentagram - Review Your Choices
10. Human - The Sound of Yellow
