Does anyone know what kind of royalties a band (its songwriters, specifically) gets when another band records a cover of one of their song? I'm listening to Metallica's Garage Inc. and was just wondering.

not to sure of ther amount but anybands that got covered by metallica would be in the money,read an interview and mercyful fate were giving a big thankyou to metallica for lining there pockets
5 percent maybe 10 got to original band,would be intertesting to find out

The band doesn't pay so much for the rights to record the song, but every time that cover gets airplay (or better yet, performed on TV) all of that money goes to the original band &/or songwriters. That is why most covers wind up on B-sides.
