Which of these deserve the constant criticism that's thrown at them?

@-Nataservent-How did you kow I am a bastard? :tickled: I am not telling you how to live your life, friend. I am telling you how I live mine and then trying to force my opinions on you....oh wait.

@-ChaoticManifesto-You actually hit the nail on the head, friend. The reason I hate all of these bands is because they all have fucking gimmicks, I hate gimmicks, BUT, I also think their music is total mediocratic Commercialized Radio metal, I can't stand that shit, when I listen to metal I want to be hit upside the head with raw emotion, pain, anger, and aggression, these bands do not do that at all.

The gimicks-SOAD-The singer, and their nationality, i know they deny this, but it has worked for them none the less.

Mud vein(I prefer to spell words correctly) foolish looking make up and douche baggish names.

Slip Knot-really, do I need to go into these guys, can anyone say KISS?

Corn-Seven string guitars and stupid sounding bass. Oh and songs about faggets and such.

Disturbed-Scat singing, it is sooo fucking brutal in metal.

Lincoln Park-Two singers, yeah, you get it.

Gimmicks are the reason I really do not listen to black metal and/or overtly satanic or christian bands, I like music not distractions.

A lot of those bands have dumped the gimmicks.

I think that everyone is still wrapped up in their own opinions, and perceive them as facts. Just because I say KoRn suck two dicks and a piece of shit doesn't mean that they actually do. And I like Mudvayne. I like their costumes, silly names, their crazy drummer, and their alt-metal guitarist. I also like their thought-provoking lyrics, their raw emotion, their time sigs, their melody, and their aesthetic. I like Disturbed's catchy metal, scatting and all. I like SOAD's Middle-Eastern sounds and poitical themes. I don't like Linkin Park and slipknot for any reason other than that i don't like them. I guess I just grew out of them.

Opinuions, people. That's all they are. Oh, yeah, and as of a week or so ago, the term "nu-metal" is obsolete. Call it alt-metal or mainstream hard rock, but "Nu-metal" and it's negative connotations is dead.

ahh yes anonymousnick we had that discussion awhile back haha. I'll tell ya, one band that gets a ton of criticism also would be Sevendust. Granted, yes Sevendust doesn't focus on guitarskill or basswork, but the singer is a beast at what he does. Also, Morgan Rose is one of the most on-beat drummers I have ever seen. his drumming is like fucking perfect. Sevendust may have 3 vocalists, but they don't all always sing. It works great for them. AND, loets be honest here... how many drummers sing while playing? Morgan does. A whole song, sometimes. And Sevendust's acoustic track on Angel's Son is very nice. I think we should add Sevendust to that list for ppl to comment on.

I know where you're getting at with the subject on gimmicks, because I myself can't stand all the "I love Satan, I'll buttfuck Christ with a spike" type of shit, and most of the time most of the music are jokes as well very occasionally you get the odd band with a fucking horrible gimmick and still make really good music. One band I'd take into consideration is Dark Funeral, with their disgusting corpsepaint and overly satanic image, I still think their music is pretty good.

But what I don't understand is why people call these bands "not metal", just because of the image and commercialisation. Ok they might sound shit and basically sound like even more shit than you can imagine, but they still got the qualities of metal bands, fast aggressive music. Now if your favourite underground metal band started wearing masks and having a gimmick getting really popular, would you call them non metal?

Popularity does not enter the equation for me, if Death started wearing corpse paint and acting all Pagan and such shit, I would have stopped listening to them. I don't do gimicks, it just distracts from the music, and if half of those bands did not have the gimicks they have, they would be nowwhere. To me music is art, friend, not entertainment(although art can also be entertaining, but there is a difference between entertaining art and just plain entertainment), I believe that is the defining difference in this opinion fueled diatribe of ours

System of a Down - I like the lyrics, and they're creative with their music. Its a little repetetive at times, and they have a few crappy tracks, but despite that, I liek System

Mudvayne - Yuk. The only talented member is the drummer. Whats with all the make up and shit? They need to grow up and try playing some decent music.

Slipknot - Slipknot minus the Masks and Rapping would be half decent. There's nothing wrong with 9 members, just they don't use the talent which they quite obviously have.

Korn - Bah. They spawned a genre of shitty soundalikes. That is unforgivable.

Disturbed - Their vocalist pisses me off to know extent, and the music is flat and boring, way to one-dimensional. And the messiah crap which their lead singer rants on about... eww.

Linkin Park - They can throw a catchy tune together, I'll give em that, but its so mediocre and average it makes me sick. At least alot of nu-metal bands try to veer away from the mainstream crap Linkin Park put out.

Bizarre that I would see the day when someone with an Emporer logo in their sig would say anything about any of the above bands except perhaps "utterly revolting".

Weird. Heh! Perhaps that is saying something about Emporer fans, eh?? Just kidding everyone, just kidding. Take a deep breath...

Mike.

I make an exception for Emperor cause the music doesn't suck :p :D

*raises eyebrow*

I honestly can't see whats wrong with nine members. Ok, they could get rid of the sampling guys, and kick out a drummer, but I don't see why they get shit for having lots of members, when they could just get shit for playing crap music.

There IS nothing wrong with having 9 members, but the fact that I've seen bands with 3 members play better music isn't exactly a great omen for Slipknot.

@Aj - I was just being a bitch, music is great :kickass:

Disturbed still sucks ass and they need to die

Opinions suck if they're not mine. :p

I bet one day one of you will enjoy an INSTYNK tune hahaha

I get what you mean and I don't like gimmicks no more than you do. But for me, I disregard their gimmicks and still listen to them and if they are good then I'll like them. As I said, it's the music that really counts not the image, that's why for my battle of the bands school competition, I lost because I didn't have a gimmick and the other band did while their music was very average. People rely on image too much now to get popular and that's when it totally degrades the face of music.

I love music that is thought provoking in terms of song structures and technicality(e.g Opeth, Cynic, Symphony X, Emperor, alot of death metal, etc), but I also love music that is also catchy and entertaining(e.g Children of Bodom, old Pantera, old Metallica, mainly old school metal bands)

I don't really know what my basic taste is because I'll like anything that sounds good to me. :) So I do agree with you to some point. But if Death still made the same music they did but act like major knobs with corpse paint and armor, I wouldn't really care because the music would be good.
