Ok, no rhyme or reason.....

Just imagine you were on the street and someone asked you to quickly name your all time top 10 favorite metal bands.

Who would they be??? Sure, I know if you thought long and hard they may change.

I simply want to know what bands first pop in your head.......

Here is mine (in no order):
IRON MAIDEN
BLACK SABBATH
MOTORHEAD
TROUBLE
CANDLEMASS
HELLOWEEN
SAVATAGE
KING DIAMOND
MANILLA ROAD
METALLICA

Wow, even surprised myself a bit there........

Looking back, I suppose I would say my criteria was based on bands who I have listened to the longest coupled with the amount of albums in their discography that I truly own and enjoy.

Helloween
Voivod
Demon
Crystal Eyes
Angra
High Spirits
Therion
Praying Mantis
Iron Maiden
INC (Indestructable Noise Command)

it was hard...there are so many other great bands that have maybe on amazing album like Heathen, Rigor Mortis or Vio-Lence but have more crap that good. I went with who has the strongest catalog and what I listen to the most at random times.

It is difficult to answer this for several reasons. I would not say thin Lizzy myself since I do see them as just a hard rock band, though they are one of if not my favorite hard rock band. Same with Rainbox and Heep.
Then i would also be torn over the issue of some of the bands I loved like Queensryche have now put out just as many terrible albums as they did good albums.
I'm guessing I would answer it with the given; Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, but must one really need to mention them would they not be a given?
Savatage have never done any wrong by me. Thwey are one of my favorite bands but I just keep it on the downlow.

Very hard to narrow just 10 but off the top of my head,
Black Sabbath
Armored Saint
Motorhead
Gamma Ray
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Saxon
Dio
Testament
Megade

I would also not include Thin Lizzy, thats why they arent on my list.

I know what you mean which is why I specifically stated HEAVY METAL, which I know is subjective. Otherwise Pink Floyd, Rainbow, and Purple would have been contenders.

I like HS a lot too, but for me they haven't been around long enough nor have big enough of a catalog to make a top 10.

I also went with bands who put on great live shows and bands that I listen to enough during the year. So far with all the stuff they do have they are more consistant to most bands with 20 years under their belts. Like I love Eternal Nightmare from Vio-Lence....but the rest of the catalog is crap so I couldn't put them in my top 10 even though that album in literally in my Top 10 of all time.

Oh, that's certainly logical reasoning.......

There are a lot of bands I got into in the late 90's and early 2000's that I listened to for a long time, but I have grown a bit stale on where I don't know in 5 to 10 years if they would make my list........

IE - Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Novembers Doom, etc.....

Those were some primary bands I got into when getting back into metal. If they were still bands I listened to regularly they would have maybe made my list.

I was going to have Blind Guardian on my list but the past few were not good so it killed it for me. Plus I have no hope for them in the future as well.

Ha ha ha! That's such a shame, isn't it? I never would have expected them to turn to crap. But no matter what they do it the future, they'll always be a favorite of mine due to the first seven albums. Any band who can make three great albums is really impressive, let alone seven.
