I don't know that this applies to modern power or progressive albums, but it sure applied to a lot of rock and metal albums in the 80s. I don't know what it is about opening songs, and song #7 and the next to last song, but those songs always seem to be the coolest, while tracks 8,9, and 10 are the dumping ground.

What would be fun is if people would post album tracklists that follow this pattern to a T. There are lots of them, I think.

Heh... I think that applies much more to corporate manufactured pop music than to underground metal. I mean, not counting intros / outros / transitions, not many metal albums even have 14 tracks. Power metal fans would probably be more familiar with something like:

01. Orchestral Intro - 1:24
02. Fast Song - 4:23
03. Mid-Paced Heavy Song - 6:02
04. Ballad - 5:43
05. Medium-Heavy Song - 5:01
06. Oh Shit, We Need Another Fast Song! - 3:55
07. Short Atmospheric Transition - 0:50
08. Long-Ass Epic Title Track - 84:52

Dragonforce:

1) Super fast song with acoustic intro
2) Fast song
3) Super duper ridiculous fast song
4) Absolutely insane shredfest
5) Fast song
6) Fast song with some acoustic shredding
7) Longer super insane fast song with more keyboards than usual
8) Ballad
