what do you like to hear in power metal and prog?

Power metal can get bland at times with the emphasis on orchestra and heavy arrangements a lot of bands tend to sound generic. It's best when the band has a unique sound (such as Angra and the brazilian influences in their music) or a unique/talented vocalist plus song writing ability that has more emphasis on music that will last (Kamelot) vs. a catchy chorus that is fun at first but loses value quick (Sonata Arctica, who I like but a few of their songs fit th description)

Kamelot is awesome. You make good points!

Okay. Pathfinder ripped me a new asshole, and was very different. It was pretty cool. Completely over the top lol.
I really really liked what Sabaton has. I've heard of them before. Wuthering Heights was cool. Thank you for exposing me to some new stuff!

Anothewr great band I forgot to mention earlier is Bride Adorned. They only produced one album, but it took them over 4 years to make it because they used several different choirs and orchestras in the process, pure and undiluted art:

On an unrelated note, can anyone tell me why imbedded youtube videos are not showing up on my computer? I can see the square box, but no image of the song or band. Therefore, the interface to play the video is missing. Very strange.

Hello. So I was wondering. What does everyone like to hear when they listen to a prog metal band, or power? Do you like keyboards in there (if so what kind) or do you just like your metal straight up, guitars, vocals, bass, and drums?

I prefer to have guitars and keys both, with a lot of shredding solos. For example:

"Anthemic" choruses are good too:

And fuck you, I like flower metal:

!!! That's one of my favorite Power Metal songs of all time, I used to run that on replay back in the day. The powerful keyboards, the epic choirs, the stunning guitars, the downplayed drumming effect that worked so well to improve the atmospheric feel of it = pure win. In fact, that whole album is full of awesomeness, it's gotta one of the best I've ever listened to - a terrible pity their later albums could never even get near to its level of grandeur and epicness. Basically every song on that album is amazing, but here are some of my favorites:
