70000 TONS OF METAL CRUISE

Sounds interesting, but a bit pricey (but than again, look what I paid for these ski trips - makes this look cheap!)

But at the same time, that is square smack in the middle of the ski season and already I have plans for another ski trip for 2011, which if takes place on that same week - well - during the winter, skiing takes precedence to the metal for me!
I agree with you on that. I may not have your means, but definitely my priority during winter is to spend what DI I have on skiing. Festivals must wait til the Spring - late Spring.

The other two factors that I don't recall being spoken of...

1. Triton feels like it's part of our scene. I'd rather support the scene, than pay some outsider to bring Amon Amarth around for the 10th time in three years.
2. Bahamas >>> Cozumel. Not even close. If you're taking this as an opportunity to see a Caribbean island, than go to the Bahamas. Cozumel is a tourist hell, unless you rent a jeep/grab a cab, and travel 45 minutes to the other side of the island, away from where the cruise ships come in. On the cruise ship side of the island, it's nothing but jewelery stores, t-shirt stores, fake Cuban cigars and awful food. Conversely, the Bahamas is lovely.

ProgPower USA: THE CHEAP METAL FESTIVAL!

Never thought I'd say that...

You are quite right, compared to both cruises, and some other festivals, ProgPower USA is still cheaper by far, and is the standard by which other festivals need to look at. But remember I am only going by how much I spend each year to go, and have been lucky enough each year to find insanely low airline ticket prices, plus i always share a Hotel room with my buddies, Todd W. and Rick M.

Yep, way too expensive for me.. I'd love to see Sonata Arctica again and Stratovarius for the first time, but I guess I'll have to wait... I've seen Amon Amarth once and I don't really care to see them again, and none of the other bands interest me. I'm curious to see what other bands will be playing though.

Eh, still on the fence about this one. The lineup is what matters. Unlike many of the commenters that live on the coasts or in areas that bands like Stratovarious, Primal Fear, or others do hit whent hey tour the U.S., well Kansas City gets exactly Jack and Squat. The entire middle midwest gets screwed by bands playing either Minnesota/Chicago and then to Texas or soemthing similar. Not hating on those cities as good for them and the fans that live there, but we have a dearth of mid level promoters that would bring the bigger metal bands.

Heck, I feel lucky if we get some low budget club show that is unexpected like Enforcer last year, or Havork/Hatchet, or the upcoming White Wizzard show.

Personally if I could I would hit Keep It True, Headbangers Open Air, and ProgPower probably every year. Also dug Rocklahoma the last three years but that seems to be a SNAFU this year. I like the smaller festivals and more underground cult stuff anyway.

LOL, that was pretty funny. The most humorous part, I've probably forgotten more about metal than many people know...

I get tired of only the bigger level more known bands hitting KC is all, and not getting stuff that hits for example Minnesota and Chicago, or Austin, but not St. Louis or KC. I can't make that many mid-week trips and 8 hour round trips for two hours of music, but I can make time for festivals or in this case a floating cruise.

However, I doubt Jack and Squat, or even Diddly Squat are making an appearance. However we get Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Stained, Hatebreed, etc all the time, but Kameot, Stratovarious, Primarl Fear, yeah, not so much.

I know you got to feel that living in KC Dolemite.

Of course I do Chuck, I really should introduce myself next time I see you since I am pretty sure I know which dude you are at shows. Our next good show is Anvil and then I heard there was a White Wizzard show at Riot Room as well.

As chuck said we get skipped on every tour basically, and thats including big ones as well. I mean Megadeth didnt play within 4 hours of KC for 7 years, and once they did on this last tour it was packed to the fucking walls. But smaller shows like Dragonforce and Sonata couldnt have been mor ethen 200 maybe 300.

As many have told me before just get the fuck out of Kansas and I am have been workin on it for like 2 years, I just cant save money worth a damn.

I think several people have already stated my few reasons for not liking the idea.

1. I'd rather see 10 bands that I like than 40 bands that are just so so for me.
2. If I'm going on a cruise, it'll be out of Mexico since the transportation there won't be twice the cruise itself.

In general, I'd rather go on a cruise with friends without the music than go on a cruise to just listen to the music. Since most of my friends don't care for this stuff, it just makes more sense to break up the two activities and do them separately (IE: Better to break up flying into a lift device and a thrust device than to have one device serve both functions).

edit: My post is kinda useless and unfocused. :(

I have to so agree with this! Triton Power Cruise just seems so much more catered to our part of the scene. I've also gotten to meet and chat a tiny bit with TexasBeth, and she really is a great gal. I'd much rather support her efforts (and I am willing to bet she has/is putting quite a bit of work to get this together), than who-knows-what that is doing this 70K tons of metal cruise. Now, in the end this may very well be an awesome experience as well, but if I have to choose (essentially that is what I am doing), I am more inclined to go with TPC and TexasBeth.

But again, seems it all comes down to the line up, and for me, currently TPC wins out. Am still curious to see how the line-up plays out for the 70K tons thing. As it stands, there are currently only two bands that I see announced so far that I am really interested in, whom I've already seen several times - Sonata Arctica and Stratovarious.

yes, but Triton doesn't have 40 bands that cater to such a wide audience.

weighing the options:

10 bands for just over $700 as the minimum?

or

40 bands for just over $900 as the minimum?

I reiterate what others have said, I mean no disrespect to Triton Power Cruise. I'm merely stating why paying so much for the 70000 Tons of Metal Cruise seems more reasonable.

I completely agree.... 40 bands is fucking crazy! You can't see that many metal bands anywhere else unless you go to Wacken. It's already a great fucken line up! I registered for my ticket as soon as I found out. I just can't wait to hear who else will be on it!

Porcupine Tree. Hah. i think they are awful!

I think Porcupine Tree is brilliant. Seriously, Steven Wilson is a musical genius and their music has consolidated themselves as one of the most important Prog Rock bands in the world.

They just announced EPICA as another band performing at this cruise. Amazing. It keeps on getting better.

I think it's a good concept... I wish they had announced all 40 bands before they started selling tickets though. I don't want to spend that much money for only, say, 2 bands that I really enjoy. On the other hand, I have never been on a cruise before... Oh what to do. I just hope they announce more bands soon. Has anyone heard anything else about more bands that will be performing
?

yea i know they have talent, just as a group they don't blow me away or anything. don't mean any disrespect or anything. i guess i shouldn't have been so harsh.....
EPICA is gonna be on the ship? that is pretty awesome. i do want to hear who else though!!!!

Wow I have been keeping my eye on the 70000 tons of metal web site. They just announced Epica. If the line up keeps going on like this there will be 4 all nighters going on. I cant wait to see who they announce next.

I hope they get someone like Soulfly on the bill. Imagine that bill.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sooooooooooo looking forward to this.

:headbang:

I support any and all festivals here in the States. However, these silly fake posts rub me the wrong way. Step up to the plate, post your info, and plug your festival. These fake posters that only swing by to update the roster, etc. get the fuck on my nerves.

I think what these fake posters fail to realize is, their thoughts and opinions are dismissed in less time than it takes them to sign up here at UM. If a poster has less than 100 posts and is pimping a festival, band, etc., I just ignore them. I suspect most of the regulars do. I think they tend to create more animosity than momentum. It seems they fail to appreciate the "community" aspect of these forums.

I've said it before and I'll reiterate... I'd rather support the scene and support Triton.
