My Top 40 of 2012

Ok, my top 10: (Warning: Not all metal)

1. Rush - Clockwork Angels
2. Beyond The Bridge - Old Man And The Spirit
3. 3rDegree - The Long Division
4. Diablo String Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata
5. Heaven's Cry - Wheels Of Impermanence
6. Alamaailman Vasarat - Valta
7. Arjen Anthony Lucassen - Lost In The New Real
8. Anglagard - Viljans Oga
9. Therion - Les Fleurs Du Mal
10. District 97 - Trouble With Machines

Probably more of Glenn's list would have made the list, if vendors at Progpower actually had them in stock. Would have bought Kontrust or Xandria if someone had them. Oh well.

I'm too lazy to lazy to rank my top 40, but here's my top 2 and then a bunch of others that I'd recommend:

1) Trail of Murder - Shades of Art
I got this from Urban over a year ago and its still as awesome today as it was when I got it from him. It holds the record of staying in my car's CD changer the longest, probably 9+ months. Easily the best thing he's ever done imho (and I do like his work with Tad Morose and Blooodbound).

2) Damnation Angels - Bringer of Light
Pride (The Warriors Way) is by far song of the year. The whole album is great from start to end. This was so good I faked a Japanese IP address so I could pay Amazon Japan for the digital album :)

Affector - Harmageddon
Beyond the Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit
Circus Maximus - Nine
Delain - We Are the Others
Elvenking - Era
Galahad - Battle Scars/Beyond the Realms of Euphoria
Headspace - I Am Anonymous
Heaven's Cry - Wheels of Impermanence
I Legion - Beyond Darkness
Imminent Sonic Destruction - Recurring Themes
Neal Morse - Momentum
Oddland - The Treachery of Senses
The Omega Experiment - s/t
Orden Ogan - To The End
Rush - Clockwork Angels
SkyHarbor - Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos
Testament - Dark Roots of Earth
Threshold - March of Progress
To-Mera - Exile
Xandria - Neverworld's End

And some disappointments:

Adrenaline Mob - Omerta... Not bad for what it is, but what it is ain't much my thing
Spheric Universe Experience - The New Eve... I found the change in sound jarring. I need to spend more time with it but have other stuff I'd rather listen to.
Therion - Les Fleurs Du Mal... Another one I need to spend more time with, but the first couple of passes were just kinda... dull
Yargos - Magical Karma... Just weird, not the way I wanted to see Mac go out :(

1. Rush - Clockwork Angels
2. Flower Kings - Bank of Eden
3. Accept - Stalingrad
4. Beyond the Bridge - Old Man and the Spirit
5. Van Halen - Different Kind of Truth
6. Jeff Scott Soto - Damage Control
7. Threshold - March of Progress
8. Axel Rudi Pell - Circle of the Oath
9. Devil's Train - S/T
10. Evil Masquerade - Pentagram
11. Paragon - Force of Destruction
12. Rage - 21
13. Sunstorm - Emotional Fire
14. Suspye - S/T
15. Damnation Angels - Bringer of Light
16. Primal Fear - Metal Nation
17. Unisonic S/T
18. German Pascual - A New Beginning
19. Dark Empire - From Refuge to Ruin
20. Candlemass - Psalms for the Dead
21. Headspace - I Am Anonymous

4. Beyond the Bridge- The Old Man and the Spirt: This is the #1 progressive metal release of the year. It’s lush, epic, stunning, and simply beautiful. I wish them all the best in the world, but I truly think they are fucked in terms of trying to top this one.

Utterly screwed indeed. I spoke to Herbie at length about this project (which is funny, since I am a total Sinbreed-aholic), and he could not rave enough about the talent and skills of guitarist Peter Degenfeld and keyboardist Christopher Tarnow.

They were this year's Haken for me, only more so.

Two albums that are automatically placed in my top 2012
1. Tetrafusion - Horizons
2. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata

Other albums that I've liked (in order of thought)

A Sound of Thunder - Out of The Darkness
Seven Kingdoms - The Fire Is Mine
Lacuna Coil - Dark Adrenaline
Circus Maximus - Nine
The Gathering - Disclosure
Ihsahn - Eremtia

Albums I would of liked to check out but aren't on Spotify
Kamelot - Silverthorn
Testament - Dark Roots of the Earth

Note that I'm still getting myself acquainted with most of Glenn's top 40. Recently digging Southern Cross & Orgen's Ogan & Kontrust. Its so hard for me to come up with a top list.

Made a top 5. Couldn't come up with a solid top 10 list for this year. Some of my favorite bands just didn't pull through with their releases this year.

5. The Hollow Choir by Vuvuzela
4. The Old Man and the Spirit by Beyond The Bridge
3. Small Fame by Bend Sinister
2. NINE by Circus Maximus
1. Pandora's Pinata by Diablo Swing Orchestra:Smokedev:

worth noting that Devin Townsend's Epicloud just missed the top 5.

Here's my top 50, no write ups. This was a down year for me, few of my anticipated albums met my expectations and I hardly did any exploring outside of my comfort zone for the first time in a while. My top 5 is pretty great though, all of those except for Circus Maximus and Anathema were nice surprises.

Don't know how I missed Headspace (guess I'm not paying attention to IO releases much) but thanks for the pimping everyone. Great album! Would love to see them and Threshold in 2014 as others do. I'd put money up for that for sure. :)

Ok, I've been lured into this conversation a little late, but here goes...

1) Circus Maximus – Nine By far the best disc of the year, and the #1 reason why I'm coming back to ProgPower again this year after planning to retire from the annual trip.
2) Kamelot – Silverthorn I saw it said somewhere; Roy WHO? Tommy fucking killed it and this disc was a great comeback after two mildly disappointing releases.
3)Adler-"Back From The Dead" If you haven't heard it you must seek it out! Jacob Bunten is a star in the making, and this is a great slab of commercial hard rock.
4)Lanfear-"This Harmonic Consonance" I just love Nuno Miguel de Barros Fernandes midrange. Reminds me a touch of Ray Alder. "BOW DOWN TO THE REVEREND!"
5)A Perfect Day-"ST" Very good cd! Thanks to whomever tipped me off to this one.
6)Scelerata- "The Sniper" This one just hit home for some reason. Very under the radar band.
7)Led Zeppelin-"Celebration Day" I still can't believe that it was that fucking good of a show! Never expected Robert Plant to sound this good!
8) Overkill-The Electric Age Its Overkill. There has never been a bad album.
9)Primal Fear: "Unbreakable" Judas Priest fucked up. Thank God! Because Primal Fear is as consistent as it gets.
10)Epica – Requiem for the Indifferent I love you Simone.
11)Reverence-"When Darkness Calls" Another under the radar disc
12) Suspyre – Suspyre They continue to grow with each release.
13)Jorn-Bring Heavy Rock To The Land ANother who consistently puts out soild, if not spectacular discs
14)Van Halen: "A Different Kind of Truth" DLR may be on his last legs vocally. If so, a solid sendoff
15)Beyond the Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit I thought the cd was more impressive than the live show, but they have mega potential.
16)Vision Divine: "Destination set to Nowhere" Surprised me with this one
17) Secret Sphere – Portrait of a Dying Heart See above comments
18) Devil's Train - S/T Very bluesbased rock which gets better with each listen
19) Xandria - Neverworld's End Who needs Nightwish when there is Xandria...always put out listenable material; this is a step up.
20)Damnation Angels - Bringer of Light Can't wait to see these guys.
21)Cloudscape-"New Era" Heres another band who puts out solid but unspectacular metal
22)Flotsam and Jetsam-"Ugly Noise" Comeback disc for these guys didn't disappoint me
23)Bad Salad-"Uncivilized Talent galore!
24)Ancient Bards: "Soulless Child" I'm still trying to dig into this a bit more, but from what I've heard, not too shabby
25)Speaking to Stones-"Elements" I've only heard one song, but based on that it enters the top 25 (besides the fact that I only have 24 releases for this year)

My top 15-- unfortunately just got a few albums that might have cracked it had I heard them earlier (Lunar Aurora, Finsterforst)...

1. Woods of Ypres - Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light
2. Baroness - Yellow and Green
3. Enslaved - RIITIIR
4. Anathema - Weather Systems
5. Accept - Stalingrad
6. Agalloch - Faustian Echoes
7 - Rush - Clockwork Angels
8 . Kreator - Phantom Antichrist
9. Christian Mistress - Possession
10. Dawnbringer - Into the Lair of the Sun God
11. Asphyx - Deathhammer
12. Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction
13. Corrosion of Confromity - Corrosion of Conformity
14. Jess and the Ancient Ones - Jess and the Ancient Ones
15. Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence

Ok, I've been lured into this conversation a little late, but here goes...

22)Flotsam and Jetsam-"Ugly Noise" Comeback disc for these guys didn't disappoint me

As far as I can see, this has not been released yet. Anyways, did you listen to their last one? No matter how good it is, which I'm sure it is, I think for it to be a comeback disc, their latest effort has to be subpar.
