10 Disappointments of 2014

Oh my god it's like people listen to music across a spectrum and don't restrict themselves to just Metal. :yow:

I know. It's really good that people listen to all types of music from a broad spectrum. Truth be told I don't listen to a ton of Metal overall nowadays.

It's too bad that past a long time ago In Flames just stopped putting out Metal.

As well as music.

I obviously don't agree with you guys. Blind Rage is one of my faves of 2014. I love the fact that there are some "softer" songs (that still rock) and which permits Tornillo to use his "singing" voice more often. For me, the 3 albums since the comeback are all awesome.

Guillaume

I thought it was great too. The last three are equally enjoyable to me.

Not to be a jerk but you are seriously 10 years too late.
It's not really a disappointment when no one has expected anything but a disappointment from them since RTR.

Lmao... I was going to say that at first but you know what would happen...

The last good IF album was indeed Reroute to Remain. Everything after that was pretty bad. I will say though, they are still a monster live band.

Mark me down for In Flames as well. And this is coming from someone who LOVES RTR and onward. Sounds of a Playground Fading for me was almost a perfect album. I loved all the stuff they have put out. This album is just downright weird. The strong vocal melodies are gone, the last couple albums have been great.

Funny, I was chatting with some people at the Amaranthe show here, it's funny the consensus was they would give anything for another album like reroute to remain.

For those who haven't liked the newer stuff, I would definitely say check out Come Clarity from 2006. Probably the best mix of Clayman and the newer sound.

Wow, one disappointment I forgot was Iced Earth's Plagues of Babylon. While not a horrible album, the fact that I completely forgot that it came out this year is pretty telling of the mediocre quality.

mostly the stuff there that didn't place too high or I didn't listen to all that much, because it didn't do much for me. Enchant, Flying Colors, Transatlantic..I guess I don't expect a ton from at this point. Otoh, I might say the same about Big Wreck and The Tea Party who both released terrific new records. But I feel somewhat the same about The New Pornographers and the new The Decemberists records in that while I really enjoy a lot of their past records, I can't find myself expecting to be won over by them given their most recent records didn't do much for me...and St.Vincent pretty much has jumped the shark and then some, so I checked her record out expecting it to sound like noisey hipster darling music she has been doing the last few records, and that's pretty much what happened, and the hipsters praised it of course.,

Maybe the biggest one is the new Warpaint album. The songs sound like demos in a lot of ways; a bit too stripped down and low-fi sounding. But I love them enough, I am willing to give them a pass until their next record.

I'm not calling it crap yet.....though I've tried to listen to this a few times, I don't get too far into it as it really bores me. I'm glad it's not only me that wasn't too thrilled with the output

This CD (Enchant's "The Great Divide") has taken me longer to get into it than most of their others, but I'm very much enjoying it now. Ed's fantastic bass lines are much more prominent than usual, Bill seems to have kicked up his already-good keyboard playing a notch (maybe two!), Sean's drumming also seems even better, and Doug and Ted are stellar as always.

Favorite tracks so far: "Prognosticator", "Here and Now", "Transparent Man", "The Great Divide"

Is it as good as "Blueprint..." or "Break"? Hard to say at this point, because I've had almost 15 years for them to soak in, so it's not a fair comparison. It didn't grabb me as quickly, but some of my favorite CDs didn't at first.

(fan since around 1998...discovered them after "Wounded" came out).

I was beginning to think I was the only one who liked it. I think it's getting slammed way too hard.

It's clear there are two distinct camps for the Enchant safari. After the abysmal Tug of War, it's clear to me now I am no longer part of their target audience. I have purchased everything they have released including shirts. We have moved, clearly, in different directions. To those who really like Great Divide, thats cool. I know I dig albums the great majority dislike so it happens. It just sucks to be disenchanted with them. I will not listen to this again.

I see what you did there.

In the most respectful way I can say it...who the flim flarm filth still listens to In Flames? I can't see any self-respecting real metalhead listening to them for the longest time.

Oh no! Looks like I don't fit Firehead's definition of what a trve metulhed is!

In an effort to keep this thread from being completely negative I'll sponsor a little contest. I'm giving away the two albums I purchased in 2014 that I will never listen to again. Enchants Great Divide and Veni Domine Light are up for grabs. The first two people who pm me with my real first name win. You can use google or whatever. I have several album reviews from the mid 2000s floating around the Web and am known for making custom action figures. Or, some of you already know me which is a fortunate competitive advantage.

So, hit me with my first name and win. Obviously the second player gets the leftover but it's a free cd.

I generally don't keep lists of disappointments. If something lets me down hard, I just don't even record it on my "Albums I heard this year" list I then cull for the year-end list. There is one that stands out though: The Haunted - Exit Wounds. Marco Aro is an insane vocalist and I've been a fan of his Haunted albums as well as Face Down for ages, so I was really excited for his return. But the album itself was lacking almost any dynamics whatsoever. Heavy and violent I was expecting, but even "One Kill Wonder" had some sections where they took the foot off the gas a little bit. The short, choppy songs just left no impression on me.

As an aside, the Lordi album "Scare Force One" actually was a very pleasant surprise to me. Everything since the Arockalypse has sucked hard, so hearing some good fun songs off of the new one was pretty exciting. It's not that there isn't filler on the album, there certainly is, but it's a rocking good ride on the whole.

Agree about HEAT. It didn't make my top 50 but it was a good album that was nowhere near as good as some people made out. What I will say for them is that they are by far the best live band I saw this year and I saw them twice.

melodic Rock Fest being one of them?

My biggest disappointment was that there was no Pagan's Mind, Circus Maximus or Seventh Wonder albums released in 2014.
