Altanta--shafted for Heavy Metal shows?

Since moving about midway between Atlanta and Charlotte, NC from Seattle in 2001, I've almost always been pleased with the amount of shows that Atlanta gets; Charlotte gets its share, too, but Atlanta is much larger and has a handful of metal-friendly venues for the small-mid-sized shows and then also has the arena/amphitheaters for the larger shows.

Aside from that glaring Maiden drought, Atlanta and/or Charlotte seems to me to get the bulk of metal tours, and Atlanta also has its share of local metal shows, too.

Yeah the TX metal scene rules, Austin and Houston in particular, second only to Chicago as far as the US is concerned. Just an insane amount of fests and one-offs and some really killer bands.

It's only picked up in Dallas in the last 3-4 years. Until 2009, there was no decent venue in Dallas smaller than House of Blues, and one really meh venue on the far side of Ft Worth. Now, there are a couple of great mid-sized venues (Trees and The Door) and some great small venues (Three Links, Reno's, Club Dada), all within a few blocks of each other near downtown Dallas.

Until recently, the Texas trifecta was Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, but Austin seems to be getting more national tours lately - luckily, it tends to be at the expense of San Antonio instead of Dallas. :)

I saw Scar Symmetry at Trees. It's a nice venue for sure. I'm not sure I'd ever drive those 550ish miles for one 30 minute set again, but it was worth it!

Back in the 90s, it was a horrible place - cheap PA system, 2 foot stage.. ugh. A lot of Deep Ellum closed down in the early 2000s because of gang violence, but over the last 6-7 years, they've really revitalized the area and reopened some of the classic venues. It's probably my favorite place to see a show now.

Granted the scene in Texas has changed a lot over the past few years, in part to great venues like Trees(Dallas) Backstage Live(San Antonio, Houston), Emo's and Rosa's Cantina(Austin) Tricky Falls, Speaking Rock Casino(El Paso), in fact in El Paso we are being included on a lot of tours thanks to Tricky Falls. Same thing here Children of Bodom played and only had 400 advance sales, but that night there were 1800 at Tricky Falls. Plus another thing is we draw also from Mexico, and I mean a lot from Mexico. Just wish it hadn't taken so long.

The site over in west Fort Worth is the Ridglea Theater, currently in the hands of the feds via a DEA case. Too bad because that's a great building and small venue for metal shows. Been there lots back in the day.

Little Rock gets a fair share of shows coming through given the size of the market here. Steve Vai, Coheed, The Sword, The Melvins, et al, just as examples. Hell, Dark Tranquillity did a show in Little Rock in the old Juanita's location. Being ball-park 350 miles from Kansas City, DFW, OKC, I don't mind a road trip for a good gig. Gotta do what ya can, but no complaints.

The only problem with the Ridglea, despite being on the end of nowhere, was the sound system. You had to be 10-15 feet from the stage for the sound to be any good.

Well Raleigh is no hot spot either.
I understand why but I love live shows and am tired of waiting for them.
I can not afford to travel 4-6 hours, stay the night, lose two days of work 4-10 times a year.....so.....being that I love live shows....
I have diversified my live music attendance outside of metal, trying different shows I think might be interesting and I have to say, I am discovering more bands in different genres and enjoying the hell out of it.
Odd side effect....It is actually resulting in my listening to less metal than I have in decades....oh well.....it has and always will be about the music.

For the big shows...

1. Live Nation does not believe in metal the Atlanta market. It only took 50 years to get Maiden back here and that was because the band pushed for it instead of Live Nation going after them hard. Sure, there are a few exceptions here and there....but not many.

For the mid-size shows....

1. You only have The Tabernacle here that really makes sense in terms of bookings/cost. They do go after the proven bands that route through Atlanta.

For the small shows....

1. The routing is more expensive than you think, especially when you compare it to the alternatives. There are no proven metal markets in the Southeast outside of Atlanta, including Florida in my opinion . Sure some bands do great in Tampa or Ft Lauderdale, but once again, you route with the lowest risks & cheapest costs. You have to start or end in Florida to make it work most times. It's a long haul to Texas with only risky secondary markets to gamble on around the rest of the South. It's a hell of a lot cheaper to hit more shows within a smaller distance up North and along the proven connection to the West Coast.
2. The Masquerade is the main place for a lot of the same agents. Those agents have decided to try alternate markets or simply skip Atlanta for some lucrative bands rather than settle for status quo there it would appear. Draw your own conclusions.

Kamelot skipping Atlanta next Spring did not make sense still though. They playing 2-3 hours away Birmingham then skipping Atlanta to finish up in Orlando :(

It does not make sense to the fans. It makes sense to the band & agent if they are not happy with the offer from the club & have alternatives.

Milwaukee does not get a lot of shows either. No WITHIN TEMPTATION, ARCH ENEMY, DARK TRANQUILLITY,KAMELOT NIGHTWISH all in Illinois it gets expensive having to drive down their all the time. IT FUCKIN SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Birmingham has a couple of good clubs that are finally beginning to get into tour rotations. I'm hopeful that Kamelot draws really well here so that more metal acts see this as a viable stop.

There's usually a big reason why certain "big cities" don't get any shows. And that reason is usually pretty simple... fans simply don't go to the shows.

You ask me what you can do to turn that around? Simple. You and your friends can start attending any shows you can in town... whether it's a rare metal tour that stops by or a local show. This will show the promoters that there are fans interested in the style, and could likely get them to eventually take a bigger risk on a tour such as those you mentioned.

This is exactly what I mean. If Kamelot does well in Birmingham, there is a decent chance the agents/promoters will see that market as a potential stop for more tours.

The fans have to "invest" in it too, ya know? Go to the shows. It's the only thing that will get you more shows.
