Anyone else dissapointed?

Instead of a comparison war between ProgPower and Brave Words we should lal be thankful that we have two US festivals that are willing to please the fans of true heavy metal and bring these bands here. Brave Words pulled the shocker of the year for me by getting Grave Digger and my ticket is on the way but I am equally happy with ProgPower. When ProgPower tickets go on sale I will definetly be buying one. I can't wait to see Tad Morose, Brainstorm, Edguy, Kamelot and Savatage as well as the 5 other bands that I don't really know. It is going to be a great experience and im happy that its awhile off. I am normally unhappy come September because it spells the end of summer for me but now I have something great to look foward to. Thanks Glenn for all your hard work. Although you didn't get everyone on my wish list I know how hard it is to book these bands and I appreciate your hard work. Everyone on the bill will be a first time for me.

A: I am thankful and respectful of having something to bitch about and I made that abundantly clear. Glenn said "constructive" and I made it that.

B: For all the balance, I've seen Edguy already, seen POS already, Seen Kamelot already and all at ProgPower. Then I'll be seeing Brainstorm make their US debut first in Cleveland. That leaves, what, Savatage and 3 minor league bands. That may be "balance" but it's not NEW balance by any means. It's too much of a repeat. Last year we had SYmphony X AGAIN and Evergrey AGAIN and although I know it's tough not to repeat, it's too much for my personal tastes.

C; As for what I'm smoking, Cleveland had the US debut of Force of Evil (hell, the WORLD debut from this band), Falconer and Elegy, a 1 night only set from Jag Panzer, basically the introduction of Beyond the Embrace, Nevermore, an acoustic set from Pete Way, autograph sessions with Way, Kim Goss, Jack Frost, Silenoz, Ben Jackson, and Tim Owens. Then an Owens acoustic set, and a reunion by Trouble among other things. That is an exciting and fresh lineup and it shows VARIETY that hasn't been often seen. Now this year is the debut of Grave Digger, the only Primal Fear show, the only Doro show, Seven Witches, Shadow Keep, the debut of Brainstorm, and some other bands and that's without a headliner even announced. Plus you're getting acoustic from Ben Jackson and Midnight and who the hell even knows what else. To me it looks like the only noticeable difference is the atmosphere of Earthlink. Anyone who can should do both, but it's a money issue for me and I'm getting much more "bang" for my buck from Cleveland last year and this year.

D: As far as Rage being there to excite metalheads, I was into that but not after hearing that there is a "pecking order" of bands that Glenn wants and that Running Wild is on the "B-list". How in the hell does Rage make any sort of headline list? I like them, don't get me wrong, but HEADLINING? They're not in that league and feedback shows/showed that I may right about that point.

Glenn, thanks again for doing all this and please don't mistake my bitching for not being thankful to you. I just think you can do better even though I have no idea how hard it is to do this. You raised the bar at PPIII, self-admittedly, but you haven't even come close to matching that since. I think you can and I hope you do. But when choices have to be made, I can't choose ProgPower this year again. Of course, I'll be checking back with you every year that you do this. Thanks, man.

Not me! Edguy was the band I was most hoping for, so I'm thrilled! :tickled:

Plus POS, Kamelot, Brainstorm, Adagio... no way I could be disappointed with that! :headbang:

First of all, I just wanted to say that I think this is a good lineup and many of the bands are excellent choices. However, I disagree with anyone who says that it is balanced. Aside from PoS and the little bit I have heard from Into Eternity, I consider most of the rest of the PPV bands to be newer style power metal bands. I have noticed that many newer power metal bands tend to include bits and pieces of prog. This is good and I do enjoy listening to it but I still like pure prog better (and pure power, for that matter). Bands such as Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning (the first five albums and last two), the technical metal bands (Watchtower, Sieges Even, Cynic, Spaktic Ink, Gordian Knot, Spiral Architect, etc.), and even some melodic death metal bands such as Dark Tranquillity and Opeth are pure prog metal. These bands, combined with prog rock (Rush, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes, etc) and Jazz fusion comprise the vast majority of the music I listen to these days. I have been playing the bass guitar for almost 12 years and I recently started playing the drums a little so I tend to listen to the rhythm stuff much more than the vocals, lead guitars, and lead keyboards. However, most people who are into any kind of metal listen to the lead stuff much more and if you are one of these people, this lineup is defintely for you. I have no doubt that it will sell out quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if it does so within a few days or even one day.

Apparently you never heard of Dreamscape.

I was kinda tired at the time of my post and wasn't too descriptive. Actually, I'm kinda tired now too. Anyway, I didn't mean to cause any flaming or start a power vs prog war, but I just want to say something thats on my mind.
I've typed and retyped my post several times over at this point, and I can't seem to narrow it down to any one single idea. But in short, the bands at this years show seem to have been picked with only three things in mind: Keyboards, marketing, and hype. None of these bands are progressive in my mind, with the exception of Savatage. None of the bands seem to have the ability to use keyboards effectively with the exception of Kamelot. The rest are marketed like The Darkness (Edguy), or are here simply because they are the next "big thing" like Devin Townsend two years ago.

How about Pain of Salvation?

Ok comments from a keyboardist. I take offense to those damn primative guitarists trying to get in my way when I'm dancing. Who do they think they are?

Seriously, I dont dance,,,, vertically at least.

Glenn once again bro your making me a happy man.

Now mind you I would love to see Savatage, as well as Kamelot, but I don't understand this fixation on all these other "progressive" bands who use the guitars as primative rhythm instruments while keyboards dance over them. I'm pretty amazed that everyone really craves that sort of thing.
are you serious? there's hardly any prog in this year's lineup! A Helloween fanatic should be ecstatic with this lineup!

I have heard several of their songs (both old and new). They are good but IMO, they are still power metal with some elements of prog mixed in.
Dreamscape...power metal? :Smug: Not even close...they lean more toward Dream Theater style and that's definitely not power metal

I think the only band on this roster that can be called strictly prog is Pain of Salvation, and likewise the only one that can be called strictly power is Edguy. Ryan

hmmm....if Brainstorm is not strictly POWER, I don't know what is

and Dreamscape is defintely more progressive than power!!

the only band that is remotely similar to helloween on this year's lineup is brainstorm. i suppose tobias from edguy does kind of sound like kiske, and edguy maybe has slight helloween similarities besdies that, but not much.

on another note, i love how the prog fans think that the lineup is so heavily power metal, and the power fans think there is too much prog, heheheh. i don't think it is prog or power heavy as a lot of the bands incorporate both styles. i do kind of agree with another poster in that sometimes i enjoy bands to be either pure prog or pure power and that usually works better than the mixers.

Sorry buddy but i'm really not feeling you on this one...

I totally disagree with you. Rage deserved to be headliner based on their history and they were the best live performance of all ProgPower festivals. ON top of that, their last two albums (Unity and Soundchaser) were the best metal albums of the last two years. I have never been so satisfied and happy after a performance and I have been to many many many metal concerts.

Here's a part from 1metal1's post that I'd like to comment on;

"Glenn, thanks again for doing all this and please don't mistake my bitching for not being thankful to you. I just think you can do better even though I have no idea how hard it is to do this. Judging by the rest of your post, your musical tastes seem much like mine in that you were probably at PPIII to see Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, edguy, Angra and possibly Silent Force. PP4 & 5, for me, have been the better shows because I'm interested in seeing 9/10 bands perform and not 5/10. Redemption and POS are the only 2 bands the past 2 years that really don't get my metal juices flowing.

With all the different bands and scheduling that goes on (I've been there) I can fully understand not being able to get certain bands. Who did he ask? Who turned him down? We'll never really know (unless it's in the book).

So I ask you this, what sort of expectations do you have that makes PP4 & 5 worse shows than 3? I'm just curious for the conversation and not bashing you.

--> ATTENTION DR BELL, this was the single most well written line I've read in a while and I loved it..

"i don't even know what i'm getting at anymore..."

please put that in a signature/tag line for your posts heheh that was great!

can we just call it metal?

oh yah, 1metal1, Rage is a headliner because they've been around since the 80s (Perfact Man rocks) and have a bazillion albums out... they deserved the slot.

That's one thing I like about Glenn.. he's about respect for the bands as well. That's why a band with only 1 album out (no matter the members) will probably never headline a Progpower.
