Best instrumental metal albums?

Tony Macalpine - Maximum Security
Yanni - Live at the Acropolis (you heard me!)

Those are my top two.

Def Tony Mac:headbang: The Dude is one of the best musicians on the planet.
Also check out Michael Harris - Defense Mechanizm.
Vinnie Moore - Minds Eye
Spastic Ink - Ink Complete
Gordian Knot
Marty Friedman

I haven't heard much that was solely instrumental. I think I heard Pelican once and it was pretty cool.

Tony is one of my favorites. He also supports one of my favorites.

And Stride's Music Machine is up there for me.

Vinnie Moore - Meltdown
Bob Katsionis - Turn Of The Century
Bob Katsionis - Imaginary Force
Marty Friedman - Dragons Kiss
Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
Stride - Music Machine

If you like fusion mixed in JEFF KOLLMAN is a must.

You know what bothers me about instrumental albums? Most of the songs on them are a bit wankery with a lot of slow songs used as background for shredding. Are there any albums that feature mostly uptempo, melodic songs in the vein of Satriani's Summer Song or Stride's Borrowed Time?

Some good songs there. My favorite is "I Would Love To".

But once again, even that album has a lot of just stuff that I would barely characterize as songs. I'd like an instrumental album that sounds more like an album that could easily have vocals.

Listen to Vinnie Moores Meltdown. Its based more on "riffage" than the solos.

Nightfist is an all instrumental group, they have a couple good songs that I have heard. Haven't heard the whole album though!

Listen to IA's Freak Guitar albums, if you haven't already. It has all that.

Ahhhh now my kind of thread. Its pretty much the style of muic I play....

My top 5 list

Vinnie Moore - Minds Eye
Tony Macalpine - Maximum Overdive
Joe Satriani - Surfing with an Alien
Vinnie Moore - Meltdown
Liquid Tension Experiment - LTE 2

Honorable mentions

Greg Howe - Ascend
Tony Macalpine - Premonition
Chris Brooks - The Master Plan
Michael Schenker - Thank You
Joe Satriani - Flying in a Blue Dream

I love solos. My main complaint was that instrumental albums tend to have mostly slow songs or songs that aren't very melodic plus a lot of stuff that isn't even a song.

But Vinnie Moore comes decently close to what I'm looking for sometimes. I really like "Cinema".

I also liked some things I heard from Michael Schenker's Adventures of the Imagination.

Steve Vai-Passion and Warfare
IA-Freak Guitar
Satriani-Crystal Planet
Steve Morse-Southern Steel
Becker-Perpetual Burn

if Holdsworth was rock/metal he'd sweep my top 5 though
