Black / Death Metal Suggestions?

I should be hanged... for forgetting one of my favorite bands.

A small band.. few people have ever heard of them... so I probably can be excused....

In Flames. Colony is still my favorite album, so I'll say start there, but Whoracle is another great place to start. I'm a fan of essentially everything they've done. Although, the most recent 2 have not been listened to all that much.

And well if you like that kind of thing then there's the entire span of Gothenburg metal you can listen to... though I'll say Dark Tranquility and Kalmah are the main two.

But you also have to listen to Children of Bodom, particularly the early stuff.

I can't believe I forgot about At the Gates. Fuck. Yeah, definitely go for "Slaughter of the Soul."

This is such a love it or hate it album.
For me personally, I liked it a lot when I first got it, but grew tired of the whole Gothenburg scene over the past few years.

Some claim that this album was the beginning of the end for Swedish DM.

What do you fanboys of the album think about such statements?

That's like saying the beginning of the end of doom was when Epicus Doomicus Metallicus was released.

I'm not a diehard fan of Slaughter of the Soul. I prefer Dark Tranquility and In Flames to At the Gates. But, I think that while one can be tired of the Gothenburg sound, that it was a great time for Swedish death metal, and led some great albums.

Eh not at all. Especially when you had some of the good bands like Entombed releasing pure garbage.

It's kinda similar to Nirvana....spawned a bunch of bad knockoffs, but they were pretty good at what they did.

Well, I suppose militant subscribers to the COTD might think so, since this branched away from TRUE 100% doom metal.

Candlemass brought in epicness and traditional metal elements.

Look, I am not hating on ATG. I am indifferent to them overall.
I was just curious to how others react to such a statement.

At the moment my favorite in those genres are...

Nachtmystium
Shining (Sweden)
Massemord (Poland)
Darkane
Satyricon
At the Gates
Dissection (Always will be # 1 in my book)

Gothenburg stuff...... there's something I never thought was very fruitful..however, there are 3 albums which fit that I enjoy on a regular basis..

Soilwork - The Chainheart Machine (what happened to this band?)
In Flames - Colony (must be a fluke, because 99% of everything else I have heard out of them bores me to death)
Immortal Souls - Wintereich (a Finnish take on the thing, without the camp of Bodom, and a lot of RIFFS, the entire thing isn't a big dual guitar)

and speaking of the unrelated 'goth' portion of the word :p, let me also recommend some very good gothic death metal (it exists, and isn't melodeath) in the form of the first Dark album, 'Endless Dreams of Sadness'. Sounds like old Paradise Lost and Crematory took a trip through space.

One of my favorites from the Gothenburg style is Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin. Their first album with Angela and still thier best IMO.

I also like a band called The Eternal Suffering who is from Greece. I guess you would consider them Black Metal. The singer sounds remarkably like Shagrath.

Death:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WLPvzGgWs0 - Instrumentally liked. Not a fan of Doom vocals over death, at least thats what I think they are.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQXJaE5icVk - This is pretty cool, sort of reminds me of Behemoth's later stuff.. blackened/death metal i mean. correct me if i'm wrong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt-6E2XWGaM Didn't really like this one. Just not my style

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0ZCAarIVSI Like, especially the guitars. Although, dunno why but i thought the guitar solo was lame just the way that they transitioned to it or whatever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdL-wNwXPCg Weird. First opening was weird for me. Middle was cool, Middle to end brilliant.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpkjLHtylu0 Didn't like, neither instrumentally nor vocally.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf2ZX_XYGSA Didn't like. See above

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z69OEfF15FU Color me genre-confused. old school melodic death? Reminds me of early in flames or dark tranquility. I like. Vocals are a bit weak imo, but I could get used to it (and possibly like it of course)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7FgQscltl8 This one I want to like it, but at the same time it bugs me just with way they've written the song or something.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2APpknzmDoA This one I like instrumentally at times, and other times I don't. I like the vocals some of the time. For some reason I got the image of Dethklok in my head while listening to this one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtyBidiIlPo Didn't like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYv269-HcqU Instrumentally I can get into. Vocals don't like.

Black:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNOVgsYqsZk Enjoyed it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIf2GgA1rGc I can see why some people would like it, but personally if they are gonna go this slow I'd like a little more happening. Its not bad though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvlSTL4FOzg I have heard of Burzum before,if i recall correctly he did some instrumental albums before to right? (those I liked) I didn't like this one but I randomly went to a track called Key To The Gate, which I like more

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDnwd9GLhe0 So so on this one. Middle section was more enjoyable

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH4EkKN8-5Q so So on this one again. I like the sound of it but at the same time I don't like the black/thrash combo at least regarding this track. I'm not used to hearing quarternote snares in black metal lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlbj2gSXuU4 As much as I don't want to like it. I have to say this is a pretty cool track. Respect for Dimmu Borgir went up this much ||.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSdXGcmPTWc Very cool track. Have to get used to the vocals but very cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G1lu27SrJY Again pretty cool track

FINALLY DONE!

I seem to remember now that i did like black metal more than death metal.

To each their own. I dig the riff, but I enjoy the drumming more actually. I will agree though that the music video doesn't help. Maybe I should've posted just the song. Regardless, they are my favorite black metal act, though they vary quite significantly as they have a couple of different movements in terms of their sound. Here's probably their most well known song. Couldn't really find a straight studio version that wasn't the video and, well, if you were laughing at the other one, this one surely would've (for a very different reason) or who knows scared the hell out of you. Anyways, here's a live version.

One band I do dig quite a bit which is a little out there is Dodheimsgard. They're pretty much avant garde black metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QH6yWD9WuE&NR=1

I too don't know much about death metal, so I can't help you out there as the only ones I have are Amon Amarth (which you already have) or Carcass or Death (who have already been mentioned).

Great choices Jason on the dark metal. While you know my love for MDB, Draconian is one I seem to love more and more each time I listen to them.

This Sat. song was a lot better.. though I was still laughing at the video. I want that mic stand!

Other video, not really my thing. Not one for these "techno" genre mixes (you probably get what I am trying to say)

He does have a badass mic stand. That's the problem with black metal though. Some people have hard times listening to the music without laughing at the performance or video. Just be happy I didn't link the music video of the same song.

As for Dodheimsgard, I'll admit I wasn't super confident you would like it. They're definitely a band that's all over the place and understand not liking industrial/techno elements to it.

Maybe it's just me, but I always figured Darkane more of a Meshuggah wannabe. Don't get me wrong, I do like some of their stuff I don't know about pure death metal with them.

Yeah Darkane isn't really death metal. I consider them more along the progressive thrash lines.

Are you at all interested in "dark metal"?
(IE - bands that the critics call death/doom, though these bands really aren't, IMHO)

If so,
SATURNUS
MY DYING BRIDE
NOVEMBERS DOOM (as already mentioned)
AGALLOCH (discussed here on this forum a zillion times, but worth all the hype)
DRACONIAN

For black / death / experimental / weird:
ENSLAVED
SIGH
NACHTMYSTIUM

:e--man-hugs Jasonic:

TOP MARKS.

Only band I didn't like as much was the Nachtmystium and that was the track Ghost of Grace (i just listened to the top one on youtube) and that was only because after listening to everything else you suggested.. it just wasn't as exciting... not that it was bad or anything.. it just wasn't that impressive etc.

I just thought of this one, based on the stuff you seem to like (melodic).
