Britt posted some interesting numbers over on the Powerfest forum regarding band popularity as measured by My Space numbers. Obviously, this is a world wide picture instead of a region, but it should give you an idea nonetheless. It may surprise a few of you:

Nightwish 4,591,508
Lacuna Coil 3,143,710
Megadeth 2,260,311
Iron Maiden 2,167,228
Dream Theater 1,558,958
Amon Amarth 772,978
Queensryche 584,130
Kamelot 486,785
Nile 470,882
Blind Guardian 412,639
Sonata Arctica 401,698
Kataklysm 382,740
Nevermore 377,441
Symphony X 326,722
Firewind 229,870
Moonspell 220,285
Amorphis 190,526
Satyricon 187,678
Iced Earth 163,156
Turisas 160,477
Volbeat 151,872
Stratovarius 145,115
Riverside 109,409
Trouble 107,001
Elvenking 83,481
Candlemass 75,257
Nocturnal Rites 72,742
Novembers Doom 71,861
Pagan's Mind 71,031
Primordial 70,877
Threshold 60,949
Angra 49,332
Mystic Prophecy 28,755
Vanden Plas 23,193
Wolverine 21,496
Brainstorm 21,492

Some of these numbers are probably skewed by multiple/fake myspace profiles for a band. The numbers for Angra in particular struck me as being pretty off.

The only reason I do care about the popularity of my bands, is that if they arent' popular its unlikely I can see them live.

Good to see Turisas that high... 'RAH RAH RASPUTIN!!'

Kamelot being so high above Nile surprises me (being that Nile has the Ozzfest connection). Everything else seems reasonable.

At first, I thought this post was going to be asking how popular our favorite band(s) is/are. Mine has about 1000 fans hehe.

Some bands from my top friends list:

Cathedral- 12474
The Gates of Slumber- 7480
Hammers of Misfortune- 4214
Deceased- 3786
Reverend Bizarre- 2400
Twilight Odyssey- 1798
Upwards of Endtime- 1216
Dusk (Pakistan)- 886
Dawnbringer- 188

I don't think fake profiles have that much of an impact when you get to these high numbers. As for Angra, I would assume that their South American fanbase is not represented well at all due to a lack of internet connectivity or perhaps Myspace is not a popular tool there as well?

A Lower Deep 22,080 ;-)

How many times did you hit refresh on your Web browser today? =D

And popularity depends on the activity of their myspace, and how long they've been a member. If they spam out bulletins, if its an official myspace for a band and they answer questions, if there are 10 different unofficial ones for your band....

BTW for angra.. here are numbers for 3 different myspace sites.

Porcupine Tree 676,612
Opeth 1,434,697

Firewind 229,870
Iced Earth 163,156

Elvenking 83,481

There are a few missing but I am glad that Queensryche & Trouble were on the list. Trouble usually never gets a mention.

I THINK profile views are what are being used here.
I'd like to see numbers from regular official website hits, but bots could totally skew those figures....

The fact that Nighwish's numbers are double Maiden's, tells you all you need to know about the value of that data. There isn't a single place on Earth, where Nightwish would outdraw Maiden, including Tuomas' living room.

Zod

Well Maiden's fanbase is older and I doubt a majority are computer literate and care enough to view their MySpace

The date the band's MySpace page went online is a huge variable. Lacuna Coil has had their MySpace page up since March 28, 2005. In contrast, Iced Earth didn't have an official MySpace page launched until June 4, 2007.

I'm not saying that Iced Earth will have Lacuna Coil two-year numbers after it's page has been up two years, but as with all statistical comparisons, you really need to do some investigation into how the numbers were gathered and how they were analyzed. Working in the biological and medical research fields, I can tell you that statistics can be maniupulated and presented to make whatever point you want to make - just like advertising. Always ask yourself the question, "Compared to What" and "Compared to When" when someone makes a claim that their product is "x%" better. Are they comparing apples to apples, or apples to grapefruit?
