Headliner #2 Confirmed:

They play a variation of death metal sure, but when I said "death metal" in my earlier post I was referring to straight up death metal which was what people were accusing Amorphis of. This (not yours, but the accusations) is a ridiculously close-minded and untrue statement.

And FYI people, no they did not drop the growls (well they did for a while but they came back recently). The last 2 CDs have plenty of them. If that bugs you guys too bad. Your opinion and your loss. Amorphis is a great band and I'm sure there are plenty who are exited about them being on this awesome festival.

And to add to Stingray's comment, Akercocke would be awesome in the future!

Are their earlier albums any better than their latest? I downloaded Eclipse and Silent Waters and all I can hear is a band who uses death growls and clean vocals...not impressed at all

Try Tuonela. If you're not into down tempo atmospheric music like Riverside you probably won't dig Amorphis either.

Anyway I wouldn't really call Amorphis death metal. More of a death/doom hybrid, at least for the older stuff. The only DM elements they really have/had are the growls and vocals don't define an entire genre.

Not striking me

I ALMOST WENT AGAIN

WHY AMORPHIS, WHY

If you're gonna decide not to go just because of the Amorphis announcement, maybe you really shouldn't go.

It's not like it won't sell out anyways. This is one of the best and most balanced lineups of ProgPower to date. No huge names, but every single band is at the very least good.

Well he already said that he only likes 1 or 2 of the bands playing, it's not like he hates Amorphis so much that he's boycotting the festival. Honestly if I had to pay travel/hotel/food and all that stuff the lineup would be the deciding factor for me. Luckily I live in Atlanta so that's not really a problem.

Read my other post, and I hope this does sell out. Im not wishing this festival dooms or anything, I just want to see Iron Savior and IE bad, but I cant justify the cost for those 2...unless I win the lottery :heh:

I personally think 6 had the best lineup (Conception, Angra, Orphaned Land, Therion, Symphorce!!!), but this is pretty damn close and at the very least it's the most diverse prog power by far. It's sad that people complain like this but I guess Glenn is used to it.

I would also consider Iced Earth, Amorphis, and JOP to be "huge" names in the metal world. :D

Sorry, one more comment before bed...

These guys are fucking AWESOME. I could not have picked a better year to sponsor. FUCKING GOD this is going to be the best year ever.

Glenn, you magnificent bastard!

When Ruthven called me at work to tell me Amorphis had been booked, I was so shocked our clerk got worried for me! Totally unexpected and totally ---> :kickass:

Awesome Glenn!!! Silent Waters is one of my fave releases of 2007 :headbang:

One of mine, too!

Folks, if you listen to one song from the new CD to decide on things, try "Towards and Against" (track 4). One of my favorite songs of the year; has a great driving beat to it. Don't let the short intro fool ya! :headbang:

This is not the first time Glenn booked crossover prog/power band (Orphaned Land, Therion, Mercenary, Raintime... Not to mention wanting to book Children Of Bodom at one point), so why is this situation any different?

Add Opeth to that list as well. Damned shame THAT fell through, so long ago. It wasn't the band's decision, either. :(

*shrug* STFH, then.

No kidding ... it's just flat out unreasonable to expect to like every band Glenn announces. If you don't like Amorphis, just get an early start on your partying that night, or hit the Vinyl for a burger and a beer. It's not the end of the world.

A burger at The Vortex is almost worth skipping either headliner for.

--Almost.

:heh:

OH LOOK .. FLASHBACKS TO PROGPOWER 4 AND THE MERCENARY ANNOUNCEMENT. I GUESS WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT.
[sarcasm capslock off]

Yeah. :)

First of all, Amorphis were never death metal. You want death metal? Listen to Malevolent Creation or Hypocrisy.

You must hate people if you want to subject them to Malevolent Creation or Hypocrisy. :p

Anyone who doubts that Amorphis ever was pure death metal needs to hear Privilege of Evil.

For my money, Amorphis' best work is Tales from the Thousand Lakes, Elegy, and The Karelian Isthmus, in that order. Not really interested in anything else, although the only one that's bad is Far from the Sun... and that one's complete shit.

I've seen Amorphis live in 1994 (Atlanta), 2001 (Chicago), and 2006 (Vaasa). Only the 1994 performance was particularly impressive to me, and that may be because I didn't know who the hell they were and had never heard anything like that and was mesmerized. 2001 was just awful, Pasi sounded bad, nobody on stage looked interested, and they looked strained when performing the old material. but my problem with 2006 performance was more atmosphere... those early songs were not happy, and totally unsuitable for typical "rock band stage presence" antics. (There's an appropriate medium between their 01 and 06 performances. :p I've seen other bands pull it off right!)
