Anathema: I'm thrilled beyond words...

Their music is indeed very evocative and I have a lot of respect for what they do. Unfortunately for me, it's similar to Wolverine; it just depresses the hell out of me.

Au Contraire Mon Frère,

The band went from a depressing & moody era to the some of the most uplifting stuff I have ever hard in my life starting with "We're Here Because We're Here." My understanding is that the Cavanagh brothers came to grips with losing their mother and shifted gears musically & emotionally.

and it feels like we're already flying
but the air is too thin and we're dying
the clouds all around take us higher
the world far below is on fire
i hold out my hand just to touch you
and all that i know is i love you
a vision a promise of heaven
a reason for being forever

I enjoyed that more than any of the other Anathema songs I've heard.

I checked out Alternative 4 back in the day and it just wasn't for me. I think I have Distant Satellites. I'll start there. Thanks.

Can I strongly suggest that you start with the new era in order?

1. We're Here Because We're Here
2. Weather Systems (The video clip I posted at the start is from here & one of the best songs of the last 10 years across any genre)
3. Distant Satellites

I say that because you need the positive vibes first to offset your previous wrist slitting experience and you are going to get them the most in that order.

I don't think I've seen you personally sell a band this hard before! I like it. I'm listening in the order you proscribed right now. That's a shitload brighter than Judgement!

Emotion is the #1 quality I look for in my music unless your last name is Buffet. While I can enjoy all kinds of bands and music, very few are able to touch my soul so to speak. The new era of Anathema does that to me. It's just so uplifting in regards to hope, dreams, and love.

It's hard to not want others to share in even a single moment of that sheer joy.

I knew who they were but wasn't hooked until Weather Systems and then Universal, which I freakin' love - I almost never buy live DVDs, but that gets fairly regular spin around here. I was sorry I didn't have the $ to see them on tour directly after PP last year, so I was thrilled to death when they were announced.

Glenn has now booked all of my Shut Up And Take My Money bands except one.

When I photograph a wedding, I make a 15-minute video slideshow of the photos so the bride and groom can show the DVD and relive the experience on their TV or whatever. Since it's a video, I add a soundtrack, and I've used a few Anathema songs.

So yeah, Anathema = Love and Happiness and Wedding Bliss. That's how much they've changed.

I've used 'Dreaming Light', 'Everything', and 'Hindsight'. I guess I have no idea what the clients actually think, but *I* think the combination works beautifully!

"There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer. There is no disease that enough love cannot heal, No door that enough love will not open, No gulf that enough love will not bridge, and no wall that enough love will not throw down. It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how hopeless the outcome, how muddled the tangle, how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all. And if you could love enough, you would be the happiest and most powerful person in the world." (that's from some dude named Emmet Fox, but it's in a song by a band that once sang "I'm coming to an end / I've realised what I could have been / I can't sleep so I take a breath and hide behind my bravest mask / I admit I've lost control.")

You and me are wired exactly the same way in this regard...
And you can probably guess how frustrating this is to me with the people in my circle of friends/aquaintences in my life not in this scene as a glamour photographer when 95% of them won't move beyond the top 40 station or think Drake,Minaj, and the Maybe song is the most emotionally charged music ever

But that 5% who take a pause and ask"who is this" during a shoot when I have my playlist running(its mostly Riverside,Anathema, newer Marillion, some Wolverine....all the ambient but highly emotive music in this style)..then ask me which albums these songs came from..
That means as much to me as getting the amazing images that get published..
the second I posted that anathema was headlining I got 5 messages from girls asking me for more info on this fest...Riverside sealed the deal

It is amazing when you are with someone when they "get it"with our music

Could you PLEASE tell this to my wife. hahaha. I have been trying for years to get her into them and she just doesn't feel what I (and you) feel and it drives me insane because they are so good.

You are correct, their mother's passing had a massive effect on their band's trajectory. She would be proud.

I hit the first two in total cause they're on youtube, and caught some clips from Distant Satellites. It is, in fact, very good. I wouldn't listen to it daily because that's just not my normal style (and it's heavy in the way that isn't suitable for daily listening), but I quite enjoyed it all.

I could probably even get my wife into this. She enjoys Riverside too.

Awesome. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll grab We're Here Because We're Here to start.

Glenn: sure seems like PPUSA has grown to a point where you can book your own bucketlist of bands because the PPUSA brand sells tickets for you. Congrats on that. And thanks for helping us all capture that "feeling" when we see our favorite bands. As a side note, a separate band that evokes a similar emotional feeling is Everon. I hope someone who has never heard of Everon before clicks this link to a highly emotional tune called Flesh. If I am not mistaken this album captures the emotions of the songwriters who, in the prior year, lost a family member or best friend to a car accident. So a broad span of feels on the album.
