Cool. Unfortunately, tone is often lost in these discussions. And some people do get overly aggressive in this format, so you never know where people are coming from.

That's crazy talk. This thread followed its only logical progression:

Sanctuary > Nevermore > Nu Metal > the 80s > Nemtheanga > Metallica > Michael Jackson

Why wouldn't someone expect a discussion that begins with Sanctuary's reformation to end in a discussion about seven string guitars and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video?

i have no less that 60-70 strategically placed and thematic samples per album. one album i did twice and replaced every sample with a new one and included album as single 30+ minute bonus track. how many songs has CoB even used clips on? i cannot recall one. haha.

until you actually listen to an entire KWD album you should really just not even argue with me. because i could actually list the bands that might be better than me at doing but they were my influences in the first place and set out to do it better than them and i can say with confidence i did.

i thought Orlock only used movies quotes as their lyrics and not actual film clips? i have never heard them because people tell me i won't like them. too spazzy or something, i cannot remember now, but this was a few years ago.
 
Glenn, can we get a sticky post entitled "The Young & the Metalheads" or "As the Metal Turns"? This is great daytime stuff.

Here's my opinion on some takes in the previous pages:

  • Sanctuary could have been a household name in metal if ITMB didn't come out when grunge was being hatched. If they were stil together, with the direction they were heading, could be mentioned in the same breath as Fates or DT, but heavier.
  • Opinions are like _____ everyone has one. Don't trash someone's _____ unless you're into that sorta thing. It's much more fun to keep it light-hearted and sarcastic.
  • 7 strings does not a nu-metal band make (see Steve Vai).
  • If Nevermore sounds like Korn then the world as we know it should come to a screeching halt. Please take that person to Metal 101 for a brush up course. Perhaps "Heavy Metal for Dummies"?
  • The Glorious Burden does in deed rock and, IMO, is the best Iced Earth album to date edging out 'Wicked' by a smidge.
some 90s albums that could potentially be the next "Operation Raining Puppets Among Painkiller Madman":
  • Seasons In The Abyss
  • Cowboys From Hell
  • Vulgar Display Of Power
  • Lights Camera Revolution
  • Chaos A.D.
  • Sound Of White Noise
  • Saigon Kick s/t
  • Streets
  • Bloody Kisses
I could list more, but off the top of my head these albums brought more to the table than expected for audiences, especially here in the USA. Of course, this is just one fan's opinion.

Also I'll go on the record that if it wasn't for Pantera, metal probably would have officially died here in America. :headbang::kickass:

just as EVERY thread worth reading should progress i think. if we aren't chatting amongst ourselves and letting the discussion go where it may what is the point, right?!

i mean we all have our opinions, but as long as there is a group hug at the end, it's all straight.

Nah they have lots of film samples. Definitely check them out though. I haven't really heard much of their earlier stuff but the album Destination Time Today isn't too chaotic.

Out of curiosity what's the legal deal with stuff like that? Do you not have to worry about paying royalties or something because the clips are so short?

Wait... you use 60-70 PER ALBUM? Do you get permission from the studio for each snippet you use? And what's the purpose? Seems more like a gimmick to me than an artistic statement. As for my examples, CoB have on several examples used snippets from American Psycho and other films.

Taste of My Scythe from Follow The Reaper has a quote from Exorcist 3 at the beginning of it. Bodom Beach Terror has an American Psycho quote at the end which continues while it bleeds into Angels Don't Kill, from Hate Crew Deathroll. The beginning of Warheart from Hatebreeder starts out with a quote from Amadeus. The beginning of The Nail from Something Wild has a quote from Ben Hur. Those are just the CoB examples I can find right now without even really looking. As for Overkill, off of the top of my head: At the beginning of It Lives, from The Underground And Below, is a quote from Raising Arizona. Or the famous quote from Carlito's Way at the beginning of The Wait/New Highs in Lows from WFO, among others.

urban myth that is. hahaha. i don't give away all my secrets. ;) funny story, i did have the kid i sampled from IDENTITY message me and said he was at a party and heard our song he was sampled in and said he loved it. especially since he was so young in that and is like 15 now. hahaha. he said he was like, "wait, that was me?!" totally classic.

i have also heard other rumors that rob zombie has heard our stuff and dug it, but i doubt that. would be cool though because i love his film work.

Sweet Jebus, i saw the thread title and actually thought there was a 7-page discussion on Sanctuary going on.

Despite following metal in the 80's I never heard Sanctuary until after I had heard a couple of Nevermore albums. I think Nevermore is fantastic, have all their albums, have seen them live a few times, and am of the opinion that they're getting better with each new album.

But...

Sanctuary's "Battle Angels" alone does more for me in 5 minutes than any (hell, maybe all) Nevermore album. I'm sure nostalgia has a lot to do with that. I love the 80's metal sound and feeling, and as soon as a Sanctuary album comes on that feeling comes screaming out of the speakers. I'd enjoy seeing Nevermore at PPUSA. I'd LOVE seeing Sanctuary at PPUSA.

That's an interesting thought. However, did Pantera actually actually bridge the gap to where we are today? I'll admit, despite Pantera, I lost track of Metal through the late 90s, so I'm certainly not going to debate the point. I'll merely suggest, it seems more like Metal did in fact die in the 90s, and slowly reemerged from the grave.

I always knew Buzz-oven to do it more than anyone before KWD. Never heard them in COB or Overkill for that matter. Most have happened after the 80s.

I would argue White Zombie/Rob Zombie the best at this actually.
