Albums that you consider to be a band's best work...

haha, this is a funny thread. I read through all the responses, thinking I'd find some gems I'd overlooked, but for most of them I instead thought "man, are you serious? You've really got some shit taste!" Heck, I'm right there with the OP on 'Promised Land', but then, 'Vintage Whine'?!?

I knew you would comment on it! I haven't met a single Skyclad fan who agrees with me. Heck, most people dislike that album... I don't know exactly why, but I love it. Maybe because it was the first Skyclad CD I heard... I think it's pretty catchy and fun. I am a bit ashamed of this, actually. Such a legendary, cult band... And the album I enjoy the most is kinda laughed at by the fans.. ahha

Ulver - Blood Inside
Devin Townsend - Terria
The Gathering - Souvenirs
Garden Wall - Forget the Colours
Savatage - Streets
Novembre - Materia
Zero Hour - The Towers of Avarice
Eternity X - The Edge
Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

I don't think a lot of those albums fit the criteria... They are almost all beloved by the fans. Eternity X fans actually claim that The Edge is one of the best prog metal albums of all time! I am not a fan of the disc at all, but it's easily the favorite album by Eternity X fans...

I think the one album that fits this criteria the best for me is...

Black Sabbath - The Eternal Idol

Hand down this is my favorite Sabbath album, but most fans would tar & feather me for saying so!

I think Vintage Whine is excellent. It's my third fave in their discography after the first two albums.

I have a ton of these...

Savatage - Edge of Thorns (seems most people's favorite is Streets or Hall of the Mountain King)
Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider (not Something Wicked or Dark Saga)
Circle II Circle - The Middle of Nowhere
Jon Oliva's Pain - Global Warning
Gamma Ray - Insanity and Genius
Moonspell - Irreligious
Evergrey - The Dark Discovery
Dio - Lock Up the Wolves
Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer
Rage - Reflections of a Shadow
Sentenced - Frozen
Stratovarius - Dreamspace
Tad Morose - Sender of Thoughts
Wuthering Heights - Within
Candlemass - s/t
Flotsam and Jetsam - When the Storm Comes Down
Chastain - In Dementia
Fates Warning - Night on Brocken
Sabbat - Mourning Has Broken
Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka

Don't even get me started on all the albums I love, that no one else seems to like at all.

Dark Tranquillity - Haven
Leaves' Eyes - Njord
Seventh Wonder - Waiting in the Wings (though all three Tommy-era albums seem to be well-liked)
Tristania - World of Glass
Týr - Land

Alchemist - Tripsis
Angra - Aurora Consurgens
Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
Dark Tranquillity - Character
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony Is a Dead Scene
Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite
Dysrhythmia - Psychic Maps
Elvenking - Heathenreel
Ephel Duath - Phormula
Firewind - Between Heaven and Hell
Hexenhaus - A Tribute to Insanity
Jag Panzer - Casting the Stones
Mekong Delta - Lurking Fear
Meshuggah - ObZen
Metallica - ...And Justice for All
Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love
Power of Omens - Rooms of Anguish
Rage - Secrets in a Weird World
Sentenced - North from Here
Sieges Even - Life Cycle
Sinergy - Beware the Heavens
Skyclad - Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol
Solefald - Pills against the Ageless Ills
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Vintersorg - The Focusing Blur
Voivod - Killing Technology
Volbeat - The Strength, The Sound, The Songs

Though back to the OP, having recently picked up FNM's 'King For a Day...' and really enjoying it, maybe it's time to complete my collection, in what would surely be my most-chronologically-spread-out discography-collection ever:

Album - Date of acquisition
=================
The Real Thing - 1997-11-29
Angel Dust - 2003-11-24
King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime - 2010-07-01

Actually I guess I need to wait another 5 or 6 years to keep the cadence right!

Neil

Haha, when you get around to purchase "Album of the Year" it will most likely be "Album of the Year 2055" ;)

"Cold Lake" anyone ;)

Just kidding - as much as I love that disc, it is NOT the best Celtic Frost disc by any means - it's just a good album very much underrated and wrongfully hated upon.

 This album honestly probably does get more slack than it actually deserves. But it is just so easy and certainly not CF best work. The only other album that I can think of that takes such a beating is Crimson Glory's 'Strange and Beautiful'.

My bad... I must have totally missed your first sentence... sorry, man. My vote for The Gathering stands, though. I haven't met many fans who consider Souvenirs their best.

That's a good pick, Souvenirs is one of my favorites too.... The old school fans usually take Mandylion or Nighttime Birds, while the fans of the newer style usually go for How To Measure a Planet...

Voivod - Dimension Hatross
- Nothingface (had to go with two because both are equal)

Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare

Blind Guardian - Nightfall on Middle Earth

Heathen - Breaking the Silence

I think you missed the point dude.
He asked for albums that others don't find universally to be their best work.
The 4 you listed above are pretty universally agreed upon to be those band's finest hour.

Motorhead - Another Perfect Day

It isn't as gritty or raw, and probably has the greatest production ever on a Motorhead release. As far as songwriting goes, I think its one of their best. Many disregarded it, esp since it was the first without Fast Eddie. Also, at the time, Brian Robertson refused to play a lot of the older material live, and wore white shoes and a headband.

Still though, these two are classics which even Lemmy himself has pulled out in recent years again:
