Change your mind on anyone yet??

Glenn, as you have discovered, with this lineup and future obscure lineups, you will have to promote not only the festival but also the bands. When the vast majority of the audience says "Who?" to most of your choices, then your job is going to be twice as hard.

Based on what I've heard so far, I'd say Voyager is a strong contender for me. But Haken and Arcturus are beyond bizarre and not my taste. I think I'd need some of the drugs these guys are taking to appreciate their "music". While Dream Evil is dull and extremely cheesey.

I think you keep missing the point...most of the METAL AUDIENCE IN GENERAL (aka those who don't normally go to ProgPower) are NOT saying "who?" to bands like Arcturus and Therion! These are huge names! They're just a bit outside of the normal ProgPower sterotypical band.

This lineup really isn't obscure...perhaps you're not as in tune with the genre as you think you are?

You're right. The problem is that those 3 bands make up 3.5 hours of the 12.5 hours of music, and personally, despite their repeat status, I count Therion as one of the oddballs, making 5 out of 12.5 hours. Plus, even though I do love some of the bands, others, despite being part of the normal formula, just aren't my bag, so for me, there just isn't much more music here than I would get at a local show. By placing oddballs into 3 of the 4 top slots, the rest of the lineup had to be nearly perfect to attract me to it, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
That's a whole lot of math. So, let's simplify...

ProgPower = 4 x Days x Awesome

There wasn't a band on this past year's roster that I was jazzed about seeing. I dig Kamelot, but they always tour. I like Oceans of Sadness, but they're not a band I'd travel for. Short of that, I had very little interest in the line up. However, a number of the bands gave superb performances and a few more were very good. Ultimately, I had a blast.

Look, we all have our own tastes, vacation limitations, financial concerns, priorities, etc. that determine whether we attend this festival. However, I tend to view the bands through three lenses:

1. My opinion of them prior to their announcement
2. My opinion of them post-announcement; if they're a band I was never into, I'll spend the time and take a deeper dive
3. My opinion of their performance

Often, the band can start off with strikes on points 1 and 2 and hit home run on point 3.

The reason this isn't a factor, IMO, is that a) the bands don't hit many markets. They certainly don't hit mine, and it's not like I live in the boonies. I live in South Florida. We've had exactly two tours come to us in the last ten years that are PP alums: Blind Guardian and Sonata Arctica. So for me, and probably a large portion of the PP fanbase, if they haven't played PP, we ain't seen 'em.

I guess SymphonyX and Evergrey passed completely under your radar. Twice. Nightwish and Epica went right by as well. Oh and Kamelot's stealth campaign fooled you completely. I am positive there are others, but I am not going to dig thru the historical section of this site to further bully you with the truth.

Get out of Coral Springs, it is a cultural black hole.

My first post – been a lurker for years (covers face from pies thrown) decided it was time to contribute (until voted off the island) – been going since PP V – 3 as regular ticket, 3 gold badges, and XI as a sponsor (very cool experience– am already a sponsor for XII and will try for XIII – consider it if you have not done it yet).

Thoughts on XII:

I had CDs for 6 of the bands at the time of the announcement. Had heard of Sanctuary (no CDs until after announcement – now have both – also have entire Nevermore catalog). Others are new to me – either had not heard of them or not interested enough to get CDs.

Why new/unheard of bands is cool with me: I would not have even listened to samples for Oceans of Sadness based on reviews and now they are one of my favorite bands (have 2 latest CDs) – and that was before seeing their excellent performance on stage. Similar feelings on Leprous.

Also, one has got to eat, drink, visit, see what is going on backstage (as a sponsor) – so having 100% perfect bands can get tiring.

Kudos to Glenn for his excellent festival. I am one of the old timers that will continue to come for the foreseeable future…

IMHO – I am totally stoked on Voyager. I already had all three CDs and been a fan for awhile. I normally lean to the heavier side of metal (for example – Kamelot is too mellow to me – though I do have most of their CDs). Voyager is the only band that occasionally has the word ‘rock’ associated with it that I like.

I don't claim to be "in the know" or a specialist in progmetal. But the people I spoke to at XI had not heard of the majority of XII bands. On average they had heard of only 2 or 3 of the bands and of those, only 1 was well known. This is supposedly a prog crowd. Maybe I was talking to the wrong people or maybe these were the people not expected to return next year. I would have been interested in a poll of that audience on Friday night.

Likewise, I don't remember seeing posts about these band on this forum or the PM:X. Originally most of the bands at PP had a certain amount of buzz or interest. But over the years, that buzz has dwindled for the bands choosen. Or I am not hanging around the right music forums.

Either way, Glenn really needs to start sharing his favorates on this forum so those of us in the dark can live and learn ... to appreciate his choices. :worship:

Personally, I think a year's time is plenty to appreciate his choices ;)

Now that you have gotten past the "Who the fuck??" ....

I like the lineup, especially Therion, Arcturus, Sanctuary, Eldritch, and Mob Rules. I am there.

Of course, you always put on a great show. I've been to ProgPowers 1 - 10, and unfortunately had to cancel 11 at the last minute. And I am one of those weirdos who watches every band's performance. I figure that if they made it to ProgPower they are at least worthy of me listening to their set.

Glenn, you can't please all the people all the time, but you sure do put on a great show. :worship:

I'm not trying to be a jerk here but how often do you come to the forum? The only bands I don't remember hearing about were Arcturus, Red Circuit and Eldritch, which I'm guessing years ago the latter was mentioned. Even Creation's End I remember hearing about on here. I think part of the problem is sometimes as someone mentioned in a previous thread newer band threads pop up for a day or two or less and then disappear. Can't really control that much.

Well, I am certainly not going to get into the debate about whether the headliners fit or not or if Glenn should have gone a different way. I am actually one of the people that discovered this festival because of wanting to see a single band play that wasn't even a headliner. Of the 4 years that I have bought tickets (although I couldn't make it to X at the last minute because of work), I have been willing to buy them based on 1 or 2 bands, and never have those bands been the headliners.

I admit that I am not very familiar with most bands each year, as we just don't seem to have that big of a scene at all here in Mississippi. So I tend to look at the lineups each year and usually find one or two bands that I become interested in on top of the one(s) that I bought the ticket for.

VII - this is when I first discovered ProgPower. The reason was because I had recently become a fan of Epica. And when I discovered that they were going to debut at ProgPower, I had to go, even with the ticket prices as they were. But after going to the show, I became a big fan of Pyramaze and Freak Kitchen.

VIII - this one was all about After Forever. I once again bought the ticket based solely on them. And I got a showcase ticket because of Freak Kitchen. But at the fest, I ended up also really getting into Primal Fear, Pagan's Mind, Raintime and Firewind.

IX - I was unable to buy a ticket this year due to financial reasons, but I would have if I could have afforded it. I was actually interested in Spheric Universe Experience and Elvinking, plus the chance to see Helloween on Thursday night. I hate that I couldn't go that year.

X - I was able to get my ticket, but unfortunately had to give up my plans at the last minute because of work. But the primary reason for buying the ticket was Circus Maximus, since I missed them at VII for the showcase.

XI - This time, I had to buy the ticket because I have wanted to see Tarot for a few years, as well as becoming a big fan of Delain in the last year. Unfortunately I had to miss Friday because of work, but I did everything possible to make sure I would be there for Saturday.

XII - Now, for the new year, I admit that the only band I have heard of previously is Therion (but as I said, I am really out of the loop when it comes to bands). But I knew that Therion had a really good response from their previous performance at VI. So I am having to slowly look at each band to check them out.

Therion - I bought Gothic Kabbalah and The Miskolc Experience at Glenn's table. I haven't watched the DVD yet, but I listened to the cds on the drive home from Atlanta and I really like them.

Creation's End - I also bought this one at Glenn's table to give them a try. So far I am liking what I have heard.

Those are the only 2 I bought at Glenn's table since I was low on cd funds.

Voyager - I checked out some of their music on Youtube and am liking it a lot. I asked a friend of mine who has the only music store I know of in this area that will search for just about any metal music to try to get their last 2 cds for me.

While Heaven Wept - I checked them out as well on Youtube, but I didn't really like what I heard.

I have been too busy with catching up with my work this week to have checked out the other bands, but I will definitely do it as soon as I can. But just on what I have looked at, I am already a definite buy for next year.

Never underestimate the fans that have never had a chance to see a band that they are really into (like me with Epica, After Forever, Tarot) that would be willing to buy the ticket for ProgPower, even with no preexisting interest in headliners. That's why I love what Glenn is doing with bringing all these exclusives, or even just U.S. premieres that he mixes in with the other bands. Which is why I would not be surprised to see a lot of people that are really into Arcturus or Sanctuary that would fork over the money just for the chance to see that one band.

And I guess I am even more in the minority because I have been to 3 of the festivals, but I am still always too shy to go up to people and mingle and make many new metal friends. So for me, even though I would like that, I go purely for the music. I am absolutely thankful for Glenn putting on this festival each year as it gives me the chance to see bands I have never had the option to before and also to check out bands I had not previously heard of(even if they were popular in the genre already).

Sorry for rambling. :Spin:

As an update, I had picked up Eldrich's Blackenday to give the band a second try. I already own a copy of Headquake, which my reaction was "meh". After listening to Blackenday, my opinion still stands. I don't know what it is, but the band just doesn't grab me.

Arcturus isn't that bad. Its been a while since I've listened to this kind of music but I can still dig it. Sanctuary - I like this era of prog/thrash metal, i was originally thinking it was giving me a Crimson Glory vibe but now they're giving more of a Whiplash or Toxic vibe (with a falsetto vocalist). I still need to listen to the rest of the friday line up - saturday's line up I'm all good.

Update: Really getting into the Haken. I love stuff like The Flower Kings which is who Haken remind me of. Voyager - listened to some songs last night and it was enjoyable.

I was sold on next years ProgPower for Sanctuary alone..I saw them twice back in the day (two of my all time favorite shows that I have attended)..and they are extremely worthy of headlining ProgPower! Two albums is more than enough material for a headlining set..I'm also excited for Dream Evil and Mob Rules..that being said..I absolutely LOVE the cd's I purchased at the insider sale from Voyager, Red Circuit, and Eldritch and I can't wait to check out Creation's End, Haken, WHW, and Therion

I just have one response to 5150 and Adaher:

Adaher... you are just arguing a losing battle and making yourself look really bad in the process. Just shut up and when the show sells out, admit you were wrong, or if it doesn't (it will, don't get your hopes up), shove it back in our faces with your Missouri theory.

5150... dude... when you say you talked to people at XI and they didn't know the lineup... were you talking to the panhandlers walking around ATL? Sure, not everyone is gonna no everyone. Hell, I don't know everyone, but if there is someone in that building who hasn't heard of Therion, Sanctuary (if even just for the tie-in to Nevermore), Dream Evil, or Arcturus, they probably have no business being there in the first place. In fact, they should probably forgo their tickets next year so someone who gives a shit can come and enjoy what will be the best Progpower in my memory (been attending since 4).

If it sells out, that's wonderful. I want Progpower to be successful. If it doesn't sell out, then the streak continues: 7 years and running. Do not mock the streak!
