Circle II Circle - Feb 2nd - Exclusive Atlanta Show!

Paul said: For a relatively young band (18-21 or so), I thought EbS did a fine job. Their future's so bright, they'll have to wear shades...

actually they are 17 (Zak, the bassist) to almost 20 (Patrick on March 24th). :headbang:

once Zak turns 18 in May, they will ALL finally be legal. ;)

great stuff all around. First time to see EbS and really impressed, looking forward to destorying the stage in Birmingham with these kats. HW were great as always, but I kept waiting for the 'tuning' (Dark City reference) ha. Odin's Court were great and really cool guys to boot. CIIC- Zak put on a vocal clinic, amazing, and most of the guys were super cool and gracious, really enjoyed working with them.

Another great show by Pathfinder Promotions.

Just want to give a huge thanks to Hoyt & Pathfinder Promotions on behalf of Odin’s Court! Hoyt did an outstanding job pulling together an amazing show with some great bands, and is an incredibly nice guy. And thanks to Glenn for providing the icing on the cake via Circle II Circle!

We met a lot of great people and had a blast! Thanks to all of you who talked to us with flattering comments, took pictures with us, etc. – it was a very nice reception, and we couldn’t be happier. Atlanta is a great town for live music, and we can’t wait to come back!

Was impressed with Odin's Court.
Thanks. :)

you guys should have taken the soundman out back & kicked his ass...way too much happening on stage for him to keep up with.
Well, all things considered, I think he did okay. We did have drums, bass, keys, 3 guitars, sax, and 5 vocals (that's 12 elements to keep track of). Having never heard our music before and the fact that we have a lot of dynamics, contrast, and interplay in our music, he didn't do awful. I just listened to the recording I made with my field recorder, and yes, there were some serious mix problems at times given how the music should sound, but again, for the first time hearing us with all the layers, he did alright IMO.

Ditch the sax player
Won't be doing that. :) We don't always play with sax live, but we prefer to. If you have checked out the sound clips on our MySpace or my studio's MySpace, you'll hear that we have a very different sound. Sax is a part of that, though it's only on 25% of the songs. So it isn't like we are a jazz combo bee bopping all over the place, or Earth Wind & Fire with a horn section (though I do love all of that stuff ;)).

and get a lead vocalist.
Think we haven't heard that one before? :p But for real, part of what makes us unique, different, and worth checking out (IMO) is our different vocals. We never pretend to have Tate-like technical singing on our material, nor would that even fit the music. I have the utmost respect for singers like that, but personally don't want that in our music. Our vocal approach is much more like Pink Floyd, Devin Townsend, Chroma Key/OSI, etc. Again, check out the clips on the MySpaces I listed above to hear things how they were original composed (as to how they were rearranged for a live setting).

All that said, I do appreciate the feedback and opinions. :) Hope you see us again soon, and do please check out our CD when it's out. :kickass:

Odin's Court for making the trip.
Thanks! 13 hours down overnight (and 15.5 for those in the band who live further North). 1.5 hours sleep at Hoyt's (thanks, Hoyt!) when we got there, then to the venue for 10 hours, then sleep at the hotel for 5, then an 11 hour drive home (for 2 of us, 13.5 for the rest who live further north). So it is very nice that so many appreciated our set and music. Atlanta is a great place with great people, and I always love visiting there! :)

Thanks to Rick for inviting me to be part of their set! The involvement with Odin's Court was discussed literally at load-in -- when I walked in I had no idea I'd be doing anything other than enjoying the show, but if it added to the experience for anyone, I'm glad to have been part of it! All the OC guys showed insane amounts of talent, both technical and showmanship-wise.
Much thanks for the very kind words! :) And even bigger thanks for hopping on stage with us to sing in part of "Volatilestial". As you said, last minute (literally) and unplanned. With that said, you did a good job over those time changes. ;)

Brian,

thanks again for making the drive down. And like I told grogg elsewhere, the next time you make it down here - for any show - please look me up. I'd like to buy you a [insert favorite adult beverage].

To everyone else: :worship: THANK YOU ALL!!! I'll be posting my thoughts and comments on the show later today. I had to spend Sunday mostly at home resting and recuperating. Whew! What a night! :)

Thanks Hoyt! I'm looking forward to seeing what you throw at us in the future! :kickass:

~Brian~

Thanks again to ALL the members of Odin's Court for making the show in Atlanta last night a memorable one. Your talent definitely shown through on stage. And you were very professional and courteous to work with.

Many people came up to me afterwards saying they were grateful I invited you down, and several more who had no idea about you told me they were now fans. :) So you have made your mark on Atlanta! GOOD JOB!!!

I hope you guys made it home safe and sound. I look forward to the day we can work together again. Perhaps I can bring A Lower Deep or Halcyon Way up toward Virginia and Maryland later this spring/summer.

Take care of yourselves and Stay True to your sound.

Thanks! :headbang:

~Hoyt.
Thank YOU Hoyt! You're hospitality and hard working attitude is very respected and appreciated!

It's nice to hear that so many enjoyed us, as we were a lot different than the other bands in most every way. Thanks for helping us "make our mark" on Atlanta! :)

We made it home safe and sound, yes. Thanks!

Definitely would rock to do some shows together again up this way and wherever it may be.

Will definitely "stay true to our sound". :) Can't wait for the CD to come out and everyone to hear it, and we can't wait to come back to Atlanta some time soon!

ROCK ON!
- Matt & Odin's Court

Good show, lots of fun! Good to see everyone, of course. Hope I didn't step on too many people's toes. You'd think I'd learn about wearing heels and drinking, but... :p

Anyway, I thought all 4 bands sounded good, very professional. I'll definitely be making an effort to catch a few more shows "locally." Good job, to everyone involved!

Shaye

Patrick, I didn't realize who you were until seeing your new avatar today. Dude, you have some pipes! :headbang: Keep up the good work!

~Brian~

Heh thanks, I appreciate it man. I've only been a singer for the last year and a half so I'd like to think I've come a long way in a short amount of time. I hope you enjoyed our set, and thanks again.

Yes and Zakk is currently the only one in the band that is single for all you ladies out there that are guilty of talking about us in the bathroom the other night from what Val's (lead guitarist) girlfriend told us, haha.

and as far as all the age references go, I guess it just goes to prove you can't put an age restriction on good music. young, old, in between; it really doesn't matter.

oh and just for the record I'll be 21 in for PPUSAX so Im fully expecting a couple drinks from some close friends. :) what a great ProgPower to be 21 at eh?

For a slight bit of information concerning E.B.S. Im currently begging and doing everything I can to get the Masquerade to let us open for Symphony X in May. So if any of you have any connections to the Masquerade and wanna put in a good word for us - please do. Last time I spoke to the owner he didn't say anything negative except for the fact that he was unsure of having ANY local support for that show. Understandable, but in the event that he does...We would go crazy.

I enjoyed CIIC...opened with my favorite song by them...and the Savatage material was great.

Was impressed with Odin's Court...you guys should have taken the soundman out back & kicked his ass...way too much happening on stage for him to keep up with. Ditch the sax player and get a lead vocalist. Just an honest critique...don't kill the messenger.
I'm glad you enjoyed us. Yeah, as Matt said, we did have a lot going on, but I thought the guy did pretty wel all things considered. Besides very busy music to keep him hopping, we were also all using in-ear monitors (at least I was until they fell out during the last couple of songs).

Regarding the vocals, if you listen to our CD, I'm sure you will realize that this is no longer an issue here. However, it has made it much more difficult as a band to pull off live. The CD is very rich with layers of harmonies. We made a LOT of changes in preparation for this show. Craig and Savino (bass and keys) are now singing for the very first time. John (drums) and I are singing more than we used to. I know in my case it is WAY more than I used to. So we are ALL a work in progress. We have made a lot of progress but we are no where close to being satisfied. I know that I personally have a lot of improvements to make, but we will all push forward and improve with time. This was the first show we have ever tried the whole 5-part harmony thing and the first show we've used in-ears so I have NO DOUBT that things will only get better from here on out. Another thing that woud';ve helped is if we had more than 2 hours of sleep!

Had a great time at the show. all bands were good. Nice place too. I was expecting a dump in the back of a sports bar and it was very nice. Nice to eat, play pool, video games and see metal bands without having to go anywhere. I wish CIIC did Burden of Truth but other then not hearing that song the setlist was killer

EbS did great last night, as did OC and CIIC. That was a killer show and night. Thanks to everyone that came out!!!!! And thanks to Hoyt and Glenn for putting it together.
Hey Jon,

Thanks for the kind words! Halcyon Way gets better each time I have seen you guys (this was #3)! You guys kicked ass and to top it off, you are all great to work with! I know I had a lot of fun playing, hanging with you guys and everyone else! Ditto on the thanks to everyone who came out - I only wish I had been able to meet everyone from this forum that was there. And a HUGE ditto on the thanks to Hoyt and Glenn for such an awesome event and taking care of us! The trip was beyond exhausting but was worth EVERY second of it!

All the best to you, Sean, Kris, and the rest of the gang!

Until next time...

Heck, all the bands kicked ass last night. For some reason the sets seemed shorter than normal. But that might be because I was enjoying myself so much. When is the next one? :)
Kadria,

Wow! It was GREAT finally meeting you in person! You are one-of-a-kind and class A all the way! Thank YOU for coming up there on such short notice. I don't know why we didn't think of having you do that vocal part earlier and planned it out. Considering that it all happened while talking to Matt and I at load-in and you coming out to listen to that part on the CD just 3 times to get an idea of what to do, you kicked ass! You are a true professional! Also, thanks for coming up during our last song, Manifest Destiny, and dancing on stage for us! AWESOME!! Thanks for all the kind words about us too!!

I agree! I thought that everyone kicked ass! I loved the venue. It was a nice layout and very clean. All the staff were awesome as well. The sound there was great and I know they are still going to make imporvements in that area. Its the perfext place for events of this size so I hope that it turns out to be a good place for Hoyt to work with and continue putting on shows.

I also hope that people continue to come and out and support the local scene! You guys are so lucky to have bands like Halcyon Way, Eclipsed By Sanity, Inviolate, A Lower Deep, and Theocracy all in ONE market!

Atlanta ROCKS!!! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

GREAT SHOW! Thanks, Pathfinder for putting this one on. It was definitely worth the trip.

It was cool to meet so many new people this time, too and thanks Kathy & Scootie Pie for being our hostesses with the mostesses. Had a blast!

Until the next one ....
Hey Tess,

It was great seeing you, Annie, and Mom this weekend! You have such a cool family! And after all these years to find out that I practically stood next to your Mom during Pain of Salvation at PP1!! Crazy small world we live in! Glad that you had a great time Annie! Glad to see y'all made it home just fine!

We almost did.....I had to drink like 48 oz of water when we finished. We SUFFER for the metal. That's what metal is about. If you're not SUFFERING for it, it's not metal. Unless you're Patrick, and he suffers because he cuts himself. You know, because he has that emo haircut. But everyone knows that's not metal. I heard he bought his jeans at Express, in the ladies department.
Wow! That sounds brutal! I bet you wouldn't have worn that stuff at the SyX show we played at Jaxx back in August! It was 105 outside and the AC was broken. I don't even want to know how hot it was inside!!

.

Age means jack all. Look at the stuff Death Angel was putting out back when they were way younger than you guys are now.

I hope to actually catch you guys next time at a show. Want to see how far you've come (well recognizing that you only 'recently' rejoined) since I saw you guys back at the 7th venue many moons ago. Just got there too late =(

Yeah, that's a hard thing to get going. I know some bands go to a vocal coach to help them with harmonizing. I recommend it, especially with how much more now you guys do 'harmonies.'

P.S. I think Matt sounds great now.

P.P.S. That was a Type O Negative cover right?

Yes. I actually trained under Steve Whiteman (Kix - of 80s fame - remember "Don't Close Your Eyes"?).

We started doing a "campfire" type thing with me playing an acoustic and all of us singing. I'm going to start going through vocal exercises with everyone too. We actually did that a little at Hoyt's before the show. I think everything sounds great doing this; we need a lot more practice with the full band and instrument stuff IMO. It's coming along though. :)

P.S. I think Matt sounds great now.
Thanks! :) Means a lot.

Yep. "Love You to Death". :headbang:
