Queensryche: 2009 setlist(s) *spoilers*

Also, if they've been "living off" any album, it's Empire

I 100% agree with you here. They were opening for bands such as Def Leppard and Metallica during the Mindcrime days. I doubt they headlined any from that album. With that said, Empire threw the band right smack dab in the mainstream.....mainly due to Silent Lucidity.

Agreed.
As I said though, "we" (IE - underground metal fans) are only still talking about them because of their Mindcrime album, which is indeed a masterpiece.

Yeah, I think in Chicago they played the Rosemont Horizon when touring for Empire (Which is about 18,000). As a headliner though, it's been all theaters and HOB since then though.

I think they played some good sized venues all the way thru the Hear In The Now Frontier tour. I saw the Empire tour and Promised Land tour at the Peoria Il. Civic Center which seats around 10k I think. I saw the HITNF tour at The World Music Theater, which probably can hold 30,000 or more. Those two tours did not get a good turnout at the locations I attended.

I think the end of the big shows happened during the HITNF tour when their record company went broke, and had to pull support. Degarmo split shortly after, and they've been a club band since.

For those who remember, the video for "Silent Lucidity" won the MTV People's Choice award for Best Video that year.
Any genre, any artist.
Best video.
Fairly big shit, back when MTV actually played videos.

(The critics or whoever picked some other video, but QR won the People's Choice slot.)

FYI - this tour features some firsts: I Dream in Infrared and One and Only (I think) have never been played before.

Resistance, and Hand on Heart haven't been played since 91/92.

Updated setlists and other tour stats can be found at www.anybodylistening.net's forum.

I can't vouch for "One and Only" but I remember seeing them do "I Dream In Infrared" on the Rage For Order tour in San Antonio. :worship: What made it so memorable (besides Tate's voice in his prime) was the intensity in Tate's eyes as he sang it.

Except for Anybody Listening? and Resistance, I don't particular care for Empire Side 2 either. In my mind, those were all weak songs when the record first came out in 90' and I remember people on a prog Usenet group and the ancient Screaming in Digital Mailing List talking about how badly they sold out playing songs that sounded like Bon Jovi. But thats old history.

They should've kept the setlist a bit more static and taken highlights from both Rage/Empire, added Infrared to every show, but continued to switch up the set for the new album.

Then again I've totally burnt out on Rage and prefer the Warning at this point.

So the show was at a casino in KC and since I just got a new license it was a paper one til the plastic one comes in the mail, they wouldnt let me in. I am so fucking pissed.

Cool, but I'm taking the word of a very complete Queensryche historical website vs. someone who atteneded a concert 23 years ago :)

Clipped from Anybodylistening.net's list of QR songs never played live: http://www.anybodylistening.net/breakdownroom/index.php?topic=3.0

Apparently they've dropped Chemical Youth completely from the setlist and from the last time they played it in late April.

Middle of Hell has been swapped for Dead Man's Words at all shows. Resistance is also gone replaced by One and Only at every show. Take Hold of the Flame isn't being played at every show and only Empire is done in the encore for some reason. Maybe to rest Tate's voice? Who knows.

I hope they keep Emily Tate at home for the second US leg this fall. I really dig the album. Home Again is really the sore spot on the record. It's pretty embarassing to listen to and I'd hate see what other fans think at Progressive Nation in Columbia, Maryland on August 1st. Or on the European metal festivals. They have the potential to turn into a laughing stock this time. The Ryche has brought out the energy in the recent past though for the opening act tours with Judas Priest in 2005 with that EP/Warning/Rage heavy setlist and the Dream Theater/Fates Warning shows in summer 2003 as Dream Theater played mostly boring ballads on that tour I remember. Part of Portnoy's obsessive compulsive twitch to play different songs every time in the same city. Didn't work too well that time around.

Hmmm. They did Dead Man's Words in Myrtle Beach. They did leave out Take Hold and Resistance. Overall it was a good show and the crowd was responding well to them. They sounded great and the new guitar guy (Parker?) did a great job. I've seen the band several times over the last few years and this was one of the better performances. I do agree about Home Again being weak, but I do not blame Emily. And as a father I can understand the special feeling Geoff must feel seeing her sing onstage. I certainly do not think Queensryche is a laughing stock. But they aren't really metal anymore either. But I am ok with that...

I'm actually trying to think of a more embarrassing song, but I can't come up with one. Aside from the fact that the melody is awful and the father/daughter idea is laughable, little Ms. Tate wouldn't win the lead in a grammar school production.

Hearing this on record inspired me to tell Urban he should never do anything like this (although I daresay his daughter may wind up a better singer than he is). Seeing it live inspired me to threaten him with divorce should he ever pull something like this. :p

I know she's his little girl, etc., etc., but it's not like he said "wow, she's got such a great voice, I have to use this..." Instead, it's like "well, she can carry a tune, so by God, I'm going to write a song just so she can sing on it" which IMO is a whole different critter.

Overall, I agree with Mosseknuckle's assessment of the show. It was pretty good, and the crowd reaction was fair. Of course, I was standing with several people who seemed to know most of the material, and I wound up playing air guitar to some of Empire , so that certainly affects one's perception.

I was disappointed at not hearing THotF, but it's not like I haven't heard it at every show I've ever seen probably.

Just saw a live video of I Dream In Infrared and it is a damn shame they are not playing this every night. Amazing song even 22 years later!

I'm supposed to be going to see them next week at The Fillmore in SF. I say supposed to because my buddy and I said we were going when the tour dates were first released but neither of us seem all that excited about it. It's kinda like Queensryche at the Fillmore is a duty that we feel obliged to attend. After 21 Queensryche shows over the last 25 years I have never really been disappointed seeing The Ryche live...well okay the Tribe show in Cupertino was pretty bizarre to say the least.

Anyway. The most telling aspect of where I'm at with Queensryche these days is that I bought American Soldier via iTunes the day it was released. Current play count = 4. Sad. I had actually forgot I bought the album for a couple of weeks. I have actually forced myself to listen to it 4 times. There is absolutely nothing on this album that captures any part of my musical attention. The songs just have no hooks and are flat out boring. Which is really disappointing because the idea for this album is fantastic and should have produced a very interesting album.

So as a Rychean Rager Supreme, I will be highly anticipating hearing many songs from from the greatest album ever created. (if you have to ask which album, you're not a Rychean Rager Supreme). However, I may find myself at the bar for the American Soldier Suite and depending on how tired I am, I may be hitting the door during the Empire Suite to avoid the traffic. Tell me again why I'm going?

Because like your fellow Rager Supreme (or the Sub Commander, 8th Rychean Legion--I love Usenet archives!), you can't resist the pull of the greatest album ever created--many songs being performed live for what may be one last time.

We (quite a few of us here now) have been through a lot of Ryche fandom together and our opinions are many and diverse now (as they seem to have pretty much always really ). That said, it seems that most of the RMAQers who have gone to see them have enjoyed it. Is it 1986? No, but it ain't 2000 again either, thank the gods. ;)

Seriously, I went 6 hours to see it. Granted, my parents happened to be going to the beach at the time and that made it convenient. I enjoyed it. Spent about half the AS time at the bar and chatting, but RFO and Empire were well worth it to me. Considering it rained most of the time I was at the beach, it was the only bright spot in my trip. :p
