Work has been interfering with metal today - unacceptable! Tried my hand with the new In Mourning - and had to go elsewhere after the 2nd track, as I could not get used to the overdone shouted vocals.
I am now slowly but surely working on this German band's debut CD:
Really very solid after one listen. Having said that, there is enough complexity and progressive tendencies to warrant another go-around....more later.
Very solid the 2nd time around as well. There are a few highlights (Ever After, End of Transmission), while the CD starts with what I think is the weakest effort on it - so get past that, and you'll be fine.

I can't tell who this is. What's the name?
Ugh - sorry about that - I usually try to mention the band name in my comments, and didn't. This is the debut CD by Brymir - Breathe Fire to the Sun. Highly recommended.
By the way - I should mention that I think the 3 weakest tracks are at the very beginning. Don't be turned off, because with "Free Man's Path" this thing really starts to get rolling, and doesn't stop.

I found this gem on my Chicago trip last week. Very solid German power metal from 1992. And I paid 0.49 for the disc!
Granted its not a blu ray disc, as I just got upgraded yesterday via hand me down, seeing Anneke for the first time on my 1080p tv is wonderful and music fits for what seems to becoming a full on rainy day
A bit of coolness: just saw their guitarist use the guitar and the theremin simultaneously - haven't seen that done before and i've watched the dvd a few times lol
Since I have pretty much covered their discography, I thought I would check out the latest Insomnium. Frankly, one spin is all it will get - while melodic and somber as expected, it was really just....boring.

Really? I thought it was their best album.
Well - it's not really bad, it just doesn't grab my attention, and certainly doesn't hold it. For my money, their 2006 CD "Above the Weeping World" ranks #1 in their catalogue.
IMO, I like Omnium Gatherum better as a whole, in this precise corner of somber, melodic MDM. The best all-around MDM in this vein (but with more progressive tendencies) that I have heard lately is Be'lakor's "Stone's Reach" - and their follow-up, to be released on the 4th of June, is supposed to pick up where they left off there. Now THAT may be one for the ages.
