New Band Announcement

They will follow Tyr on Friday. Stormwarrior will move to Saturday. Full details to come.

And I have already read one post on the ATL metal forum from a person who confirms they are now attending.

YES! This is an all-around improvement for me. After the Leaves Eyes addition pushed Stormwarrior (and Illusion Suite) earlier, I was resigned to missing them due to flight arrival times and not making it to the actual venue in time. Very disappointing. But Stormwarrior moving to Saturday is a big improvement for me personally, and I still expect to be able to catch Tyr on Friday.

MY GOD you are killing me Saturday!!!!!

Stormwarrior and Leave's Eyes are viking metal?

I never got that memo.

they may not be in the same longboat as Tyr and Turisas but the lyrical themes and even some of their melodies are right in line.

I think you are reaching a bit here to be able to apply the hip term of Viking metal to a band you are going to see.

10 years ago, you would be saying, "Fuck yes!!! Stormwarrior are an amazing power metal band" Viking metal is the flavor of the month and you are licking it up.

Sorry. I stand firm. Prior to Pagan Fest, you would not give any of these bands the time of day.

Look, these are great bands, but I always looked at Prog Power as trying to present something new and fresh and otherwise not so much yet exposed.

I know these are different times and ticket sales are not as guaranteed as before.

I thought a couple years back with Amorphis, Glen was making a bold statement that he was ready to think outside the box. Still Amorphis was a band that doesn't tour regularly, and can still be considered within the prog genre.

Saw Turisas *and* Tyr at paganfest a couple years back. Turisas is *AWESOME* live. Tyr is good too, but it's an entirely different experience....well at least it was then. Dunno if they've changed their act.
Also, everyone in Tyr is 14 feet tall, at least.

I just hope Tyr plays more of their older stuff, the newest album was a little bit disappointing.

I'm sorry, What? I didn't see Amon Amarth or Ensiferum on the bill. True it's two "viking metal" bands but both the bands that *are* playing have wildly different sounds.

Honestly, if the attempt was being made to be "hip" we'd be seeing a bunch of #-core crap.

all I was really saying was that it all has the same feel to it. It may not be presented in the same way but the similarities are there.

What disappoints me is that some of the bands that were doing it before it got popular aren't seeing any new love from it. You can argue genre boundaries, but bands like Thyrfing and Einherjer were doing the viking metal thing before the trend, but don't seem to be getting any sort of play from the people who are into Ensiferum, Eluveitie, Finntroll, etc.

I don't think it's fair to count this one year against Glenn in that regard, especially since he didn't go looking for Turisas, they came to him.

.

so what if they didn't give them the time of day before PF? that's like saying you can't enjoy HIGH ON FIRE because you don't own any SLEEP albums. ;)

the point is they are giving these bands their attention NOW! i am sure the bands don't give a sh*t when people become their fans as long as their fans now, and last time i checked touring was about making NEW fans as well as playing to your current fan base. if it wasn't why keep touring playing to the same people and never getting any bigger?! makes no sense.

but this is why metal will never get bigger than it is because of elitist statements and attitudes like that. i am not trying to be a dick, but how old are we? are we still in the phase of "well, that band isn't cool anymore because they were on Ozzfest" crap?!?! or your not a real fan if you don't have their first 7" and demo tape?!?!?!

bottom line and i am pretty sure i can speak for everyone who attends PP each year. are the bands good? are they are going to entertain us? are we going to have fun? hell yes!

I've noticed this too! There seems to be a long recognition gap between Bathory's heyday and the heyday that arose in this past decade. Bands who were carrying the viking-metal torch in the 90s aren't getting love today. I think (maybe) it's because metalheads were largely distracted by (standard) black metal in the mid-90s and melodic death metal in the late-90s.

Bands like Einherjer and Thyrfing don't get noticed over here because they never tour over here (hell does Einherjer even play out in Europe?). If they did they'd get more recognized. You don't think Eluveitie got to where they are by sitting in their basements, do you? They came over to the states, took the financial risk, and busted their asses on multiple tours.

I believe you are one of the most intelligent armchair quarterbacks on this forum when it comes to your critique. However, I also feel that no matter what I book or stretch the boundaries, you are still not going to attend for whatever reason. I could book Manilla Road, Cathedral, and five of your other favorite bands that wouldn't draw 100 on their own...and you still would not attend.

So while I respect your opinion totally, I put a lot less emphasis on pleasing this type of fan given the conditions that are already affecting ticket sales that I have no say over.

I'd also still point out the number of bands making their U.S. debut on the roster this year to counter your feelings.

We understand this, but I think we (or maybe just me) believe that there are other factors at work even besides non-touring. I think there are additional intangibles arising from the older bands' presentation that would prevent them from gaining a large US fanbase even if they did tour here, and I think the bands's themselves probably perceive this. I can't write it out, it's mainly instinct. Those bands are 'obscure' not just in the "not many people know about them" way, but also in a way that even if more people here DID hear them, they wouldn't understand or get into it the way they've gotten into Ensiferum or Finntroll. Hard to explain but that's what I feel like.

Eluveitie is an odd case. Their trajectory is a little unorthodox even for a Viking metal band. They're the closest thing in this style to an "overnight sensation". I'm also considering their early history with Fear Dark too. I'm not saying it's bad; it's great for the band and the fans who now love them. But it's very unique.
