Tough call. I'll add Lion's Share, despite that they are an older band its really the last 2 albums that would qualify.

I'll also add Fool's Game and Pharaoh. Pharaoh has a few now, but still, should qualify.

Don't know why I forgot about Lion's Share. Great band. I don't know so much on the dark element though.

yeah Sinbreed is probably the best example of a new band doing the heavy thing. I would call them the new Running Wild/Grave Digger if anything. The only problem is the band name just doesn't fit to heavy power metal. I immediately think of industrial or nu-metal even. Note to power metal bands - don't use the word breed in your band name. Sin is cool. Dark Sin, Evil Sin, Magic Sin. Breed however is not good! :)

Angra tried not to use the word. They succeeded until their Asian tour started in 2003. But when they got to Japan, and people would sing "Put my hand on my breeeeeeeeeeding heart", things got a little out of hand.

Glenn said heavy.

As for Pharaoh, traditional sure. But where's the line between traditional and traditional power metal? I consider Pharaoh traditional power metal. But they are pretty heavy.

8 POINT ROSE

FALLEN ANGEL (a little bit like Iced Earth)

7TH REIGN (similar to Eidolon with the old singer Brian Soulard)

ILIUM

OVERMASTER

WHEN THE EMPIRE FALLS

I don't doom or traditional bands.

You could have just said, "Jasonic need not reply"!!!

All kidding aside, I know what ya mean.
Power metal has seemed to have lost some ballage over the years.

There are a lot of good US bands, such as Twisted Tower Dire and Slough Feg, that are powerful, but probably overall more trad metal than power metal.

One band that comes to mind ,but might not meet your criteria vocally, would be MACHINE MEN from Finland (Though they have been around for a few years now, though only 3 full lengths, I believe).

I don't think there's really much demand for that kind of metal. Seems like it's mostly the older folks who like that stuff. Most younger people who want angry want ANGRY, so they are going to listen to the harsher genres, and if they want happy, theyll go for the happy stuff. IT doesn't hurt that most of the happy stuff comes with a large helping of fantasy or sci-fi lyrics and atmosphere that my generation grew up with.

I occasionally like Brainstorm and Tad Morose, but that type of metal is always going to be way down my list compared to bands like Stratovarius, Rhapsody, and Freedom Call.

Thanks :) I describe Fool's Game as dark Power Metal but since everyone in the band (except me) is from an already established band I don't know if we qualify as inbreeding or not.

I don't know who made this video, but if I can pimp a bit:

Also, I think that most people exposed to metal since 1986 or so, their gateway was 80s metal or even pop. So to the extent we're attracted to metal, it's a natural progression from those styles. Pop music with heavy guitars.

Seconding the Witchking shout. The singer has a strong accent but it all adds to the charm. He actually reminds me of Daniel Heiman mixed with Chris Boltendahl. Check this tune with the slow build up and then all hell breaks loose!
