Cheers and Jeers

The 14-band, two-night, single-stage indoor fest format means that these kinds of complaints are inevitable and I absolutely wish it were 14-15 bands over three nights instead of 14 in two...or a second stage...or outdoors (with all the concessions/vendor support that entails).

This is not at all at you and more at people I actually heard COMPLAINING about the rumor of the possibility of a Tuesday extension in line at the Artmore on Saturday morning, and your comment kind of plays into that (in a round about way.. this kind of has nothing to do with the crew): No one is fucking forcing people to be here for this or see every single band. Come in when you can, see who you want, and go catch a nap when you need to.

Some of the PP Fans are the bitchiest, ficklest fucks I have ever met, hell bent on complaining about more shit being added, like it's some kind of god damn personal inconvenience. It infuriates me people look at an extra day and treat it like an obligation that imposed on them.

Made me rage a little is all.

14 bands is an epic undertaking and daunting to think about as an older (to the fest) fan. The only logical annoyance is if a band you REALLY want to see is on super early, or those super early bands playing to a house that's nearly empty because fans are still sleeping off the night before. The latter is actually a concern I'm sure has been taken into account and a gamble deemed necessary.

I'm tired. I hope I articulated this well. Good night. :)

Cheers:

The bands, the crew, and especially to Glenn and Jen for making the magic happen, year after year. I organized a free community event last year that involved booking three doctors to speak – and I was seriously ready to slit my wrists before the whole thing was over. I am in awe of how you can pull off an event of this magnitude and complexity…and your ability to handle unexpected issues from technical issues to band cancellations without missing a beat. :worship: So many of us look forward to this fest all year, and I truly hope that the energy you get from seeing your efforts come to fruition equals the energy you put in.

The ProgPower peeps that I always look forward to seeing – and the new ones that I met this year. It’s such a pleasure to chat with folks who are so passionate and knowledgeable about music!

Stair Tapers – Don’t know if this was a new effort or left over from prior years, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Everyone whose patience and persistence was responsible for *finally* getting Vanden Plas to Atlanta!

Redemption and Symphony X for PP XIII!!!

The vendors who typed out the artist’s name and pasted it to the spine of each CD. This had to be a slow, crappy, painstaking job…but it seriously made CD shopping easier!

Continuing with the “insider sale” tradition. This sure as hell beats going from vendor to vendor trying to read my scribbled notes from the video presentation!

Jeers:

People playing video games on their phones while a band is performing. Seriously? Can’t you do that outside? Or even better, at home for free?

The Kroger near the venue shutting down. Publix was nice, but I missed the selection of organic produce at the old Kroger. (Although CHEERS for the drivers in Atlantic Station, which is just a mile from the venue, for actually *stopping* for pedestrians! Shocker!)

Stair Tapers – Don’t know if this was a new effort or left over from prior years, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

This is really great every year, yeah. It's saved my neck many a time. One slight complaint here though: the stairs by the boom camera...it wasn't exactly clear where the stair ended and the curtain that covered the base of the platform he was standing on was draped over the stairs most of the time. The first time I walked into the venue on that side I fell and almost broke my ass if it wasn't for a lucky catch from one of the other regulars (thank you for helping me up...i'm a big dude, lul) That thing was a deathtrap, honestly. Much preferred it on the other side even with all the having to duck.

(The tape was great though!)

If I am not thrilled by a band, then I will play video games and sit patiently for the next band.

It is not my job to be thrilled by every band. It is the band's job to thrill every fan.

Mind you, I say this as a performing musician, a member of a band, and a guy who busts his ass, sweats buckets under the lights, goes berserk on stage, and does everything he can to entertain an audience from the front rail to the back corner.

And I never bitch or moan if someone didn't dig my show. Sometimes they like it, sometimes they don't.

Cheers:

The Vanden Plas acoustic show. I never thought I'd see anything like that! :worship:

That Kingcrow/Redemption Euro Tour that I was so jealous about is coming to ProgPower! AWESOME

Yonfon bringing his famous cigarette eating trick to the Courtyard this year.

The #ppusa hash tag. There was plenty of fun stuff throughout the weekend and it worked wonders in using it to figure out when bands I didn't watch were finishing up.

Haken, Ihsahn, Voyager, Labyrinth for being so awesome and exceeding all my expectations.

Jeers:

Being woken up by Mark ME Edwards. I forgot what day it was and didn't expect it to start so early. :[

Dude counting the time signature during the quiet part of Haken's "Streams" in my ear.

While Heaven Wept only playing one song off Fear of Infinity and cutting "The Furthest Shore" short

Yonfon bringing his famous cigarette eating trick to the Courtyard this year.

NO "YOU'RE THE VOICE" IN VOYAGER'S MEDLEY?!

Cheers

~Glenn, Jen, crew, everyone involved for making this run extremely smooth yet again

~The bands, seemed to me that more of them were just hanging out this year and it was really cool to get to hold lengthy conversations with some of them

~Andy from VP for recording a video for me explaining to my friend that he's been pronouncing their name wrong for almost 15 years

~Rob Tyrant for schooling everyone on live singing

~All the new friends I met this year, and for the old and new that welcomed my wife as well.

~Kelly for making me laugh so hard on the plane remembering all the funny stuff he said that I was crying.

Jeers

~Eric's karoake

~The sidewalks

~M.E. for waking up the hotel @ 10am

~Eldritch for not playing "to be or not to be god" ;)

~Staying up too late on Friday and missing VP's acoustic set cause we overslept

~Me for putting butter in a pot to make some eggs and not realizing I got it too hot, thus setting off an instant smoke bomb in our room, and eventually triggering the fire alarms

I'll try not to cover too much old ground. So many great replies already.

Cheers:

1) The obligatory and well-deserved shout out to Glenn, Jen, cast & crew for running such a well-oiled machine and responding to unexpected challenges with the utmost efficiency. Don't let the occasional spoiled brats get you down! (More on that later.)

2) Moshing at ProgPower! I realize this would likely go under most people's "Jeer" list, but I really thought it was high time that everyone realized moshing can be entertaining, as long as it's the right music, it's controlled, and people aren't actively trying to hurt one another. I myself am not a mosher, but I was down on the floor, because I enjoy the energy and camaraderie that comes with peripheral contact with a good pit.

3) Seeing some old friends who had been missing from ProgPower for a year or longer: Steven, Kelley, C-Lo, MetalRose, Crazy Mike... I know there are others I'm missing, you know who you are. Those of you who were unable to make it this year, don't give up hope!

4) The ever-increasing number of food options. Nice-looking food menu at the venue. Nice variety of places at Atlantic Station. And Da Vinci's is excellent and very convenient; let's hope this place sticks around a while. Kudos as well to Glenn for his efforts over the years in getting food establishments to extend their hours during ProgPower.

5) The sidewalk construction. Let's face it; those of us who have been attending for a while know what shitty shape the sidewalks were in. There were injuries this year, but there have always been injuries on those sidewalks. It's unfortunate that this had to be going on during ProgPower, but that's the price of progress, folks. It's necessary. It's not that hard to cross the street if you don't want to walk through it. Let's look forward, instead, to some relatively injury-free walks back to the Artmore at 2am. :)

Of jeers I only have one:

Matt from Tribunal -- I'm so fucking done with this guy. He uses the fest and its forum to promote his business and his bands, and then he turns around and bitches about everything. Many of you will remember his bullshit tirade about the Midnight memorial a couple years ago and how it was the worst thing he had ever seen, essentially because it wasn't laid out exactly to his specifications. And now this. DUDE. You're not new to ProgPower, or this forum. Everyone who has been around for a few years knows what the crew has to put up with, year in and year out, and what a great track record they have for solving problems and running a relatively smooth show despite all the bumps in the road. Wayne and Glenn shouldn't need to spell this all out for you YET AGAIN. If you can't make it until 3am, then go the fuck to bed. And if you can't find something fun to do at ProgPower during a delay, you're not trying. Oh yeah, and if you have an injury that you're trying not to exacerbate, then maybe STANDING RIGHT AT THE FUCKING EDGE OF THE PIT isn't something you should be doing. You are a thrash fan; you know what goes on during a thrash show; and Glenn even gave you a heads-up that he was going to allow it. Take some fucking personal responsibility.

You're a prick.

~Jen

if you think so. you are entitled to your opinion of me, as i am entitled to my opinion on this. i was being nice (and simply constructive) and i am not the only one who felt this way at the fest. maybe i am the only one who will say something and actually try and do it politely.

other than that i will leave your completely derogatory comment about myself alone.

One thing that I will note is that a lot of the fatigue issue is self-inflicted for a lot of folks.

I'm not a techy, so I don't know the proper terms, but those speakers were pushed to their limit for bands such as Mob Rules, Creation's End, Ihsahn and Labyrinth. At times it sounded like I was listening to Vapor Trails at max volume on high quality speakers. It will drain anybody.

I don't know all the particulars, but purely as a fan (not as a person who actually has to sign, negotiate, plan, and do tech for the bands), I wish that all the non-headliners were forced to use the same sound-person, and that person is like Paul who had some near-album-quality live-mixing going on there that did not lead to sonic fatigue.

But we all have choices to make. And I, as a fan, make the choice to leave the venue when I don't care for what I hear, and return when I do. Ear plugs help too, though the bass during Labyrinth was so high that it made the plugs vibrate in my ears.

Once again, I had a wonderful time. Thanks to Glen, Jen & The Crew for doing an amazing job...really, I think this was one of the best executed weekends that I have been to yet!!!!

To our musicians, THANK YOU!!!!....while I did not get to see you all perform, to those I did not, I am so glad to hear how so many were thrilled with your performances. To those I did...WOW!!!!!!

To Family, Friends, Those I have met, Those I have not and all others (not sure who that would be...eh) It was too short, yet absolutely thrilling to be with you all yet again....Thanks for the great time!!!

The countdown has begun yet again....tick...tick...tick....(that's the clock).....

Boy am I late to the party this year!!!

OK, here are my cheers and jeers for this year:

Cheers:

GLENN AND JEN - Thank you SO VERY MUCH for all the hard work the two of you do. The festival went on so well. And of course thank you Glenn for all that you do for the sponsors! :OMG:

Steve (aka SkiBumMSP) - Thank you for introducing me to prog and power metal and of course asking me if I wanted to attend ProgPower VI back in 2005. Haven't missed one yet and don't plan on missing one soon (though I was asked to do a software install for work this weekend... hell NO!). And thank you for being a fellow co-sponsor (third year running!) and of course being a friend! :)

The crew - Rick, John, Lara and everyone else - you guys were so awesome for the work you do!

The bands - I got to talk to a number bands this year. Of course major kudos goes to ELDRITCH (the band Steve and I co-sponsored) with frontman Terence Holler. What a nice bunch of guys! (As Steve said, we wound up in the liner notes of the new album!!!) :headbang: :kickass:

Talked at length with Voyager and with Vanden Plas. (Andy is a very nice guy). Also talked with Snowy Shaw with Therion. Who would have thought he loved American food and can't get enough of it in Sweden? (And he loves Taco Bell!)

Seeing ALL my friends - Way way too many to mention! Part of ProgPower is the music, but part of it is seeing all my friends I've met there plus meeting new ones. Yes I see a vast majority of you on Facebook practically every day, but it's not the same as seeing you all in person! (If you're on Facebook, feel free to friend me!)

The Music - How can you not like the music this year? Evergrey. Vanden Plas (both electric and acoustic sets). Those two right there. Everything else was gravy! Therion.. oh my! What an awesome set! Oh, and the Mark Edwards luncheon at the Artmore. Really good music and the food was good too!

The weather - How great was it not to be in misery and sweating to death? I had to call it COLDlanta this year!

Sponsorship - Thank you Glenn yet again for having us co-sponsor a band. It's amazing what goes on backstage! And kudos for the other sponsors as well!

The Artmore - They went way beyond this year to treat us "black shirts" right. Chipping in free beer and wine at the Mark Edwards show was great. Putting up with us in the courtyard for the all night parties! Yeah, it's and older hotel but it's location, location and location. That right there is key! And this year they didn't screw up my reservation (though they had to finish cleaning up the room even though we were checking in at 4 PM)

The area restaurants and Vinyl - Vinyl for serving really good food even though they normally don't - and for both Sausalito West Coast Grill and Vespuccis Pizza & Pasta for being open and open late all weekend! First time I ate at Sausalito and it was REALLY good! (thanks to the PP USA gal who tipped the Sausalito owner the black shirts were coming!)

And to top it off, it was my 42nd birthday on Saturday! (Yeah, go ahead with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy jokes!) What a great day to spend my birthday with great friends and great music!

Jeers:

My effed up knee. I really messed it up crossing the street in a hurry on Thursday and I was in pain and misery the entire weekend. I really need to see a specialist about getting that taken care of. It's been an issue for three years, but it's really becoming a pain (physically) now. So I hobbled all weekend. Not cool.:cry:

The torn up sidewalk. See above with the effed up knee.

The idiots who tried to crowd surf and screw around in the mosh pit. Yeah, I know that Warrel was egging the crowd to do so, but still....

Overall this was a great weekend. Happy to be a band sponsor yet again, looking forward to doing so next year (we think we know what band... but waiting for it to be official!) I will be back next year! No doubt on that! (I don't care what my work wants me to do.... I'm on vacation!)

Cheers:
Jeers:
A very special person missing, his first ProgPower in all the years that I've been working the fest. It was not the same playing "which twin are you?"

Agreed, I spoke to his bro this weekend to tell him that I had just learned a year ago that he had a twin and thought that he was just super fast at getting around the venue (ha ha ha). He sassed me with "You've been coming here for ten years and you just figured it out?"

if you think so. you are entitled to your opinion of me, as i am entitled to my opinion on this. i was being nice (and simply constructive) and i am not the only one who felt this way at the fest. maybe i am the only one who will say something and actually try and do it politely.

other than that i will leave your completely derogatory comment about myself alone.
You werent actually constructive - you were pointing out the obvious. Had you ASKED if we considered those things, I'd have not had to be defensive. "Preventive measures" (from your first post) have been taken.
Bascially - as it is, with 24 hrs in a day, with time limits on how late people want to stay (and physically can hold up), how early we can get a jet lagged European headliner to show up and still have them functioning for a show late that night - (this IS about the music and the show, right??), etc.. this is how it will be.

We can't start line checks any earlier, and with the 7 bands, we can no longer do run thorughs with everyone before hand... so it is what it is. Would it be my choice as stage manager? No - absolutely not. But it is what I have to do to accomodate the promoter and the venue and the bands. I'm not the opne paying the bills or takling any financial risk (plenty pf physical ones though! lol)
If you have a better way to do it - i am all ears.

And - if you want to make sure the fest sells out with a 10 band line-up, I'm sure Glenn and the crew would love that.. but until then, and until you are footing the bills... guess this is how it will be.
And i will take any legit criticism of our crew - I never claimed we were perfect or even good for that matter - we just do what we have to.
The house volume issue that is on per sound guy basis and there is really no controlling that.

And your concern with the conflict between our schedule and the signing sessions... bogus. MOST of the bands are available all weekend. Also if you feel the need for a meet and greet kind of thing, there are monitors in the lobby to see/hear what is going on while you are in line getting your stuff signed.

Finally awake after getting home yesterday afternoon:

Cheers:
* All my ProgPower roomies who shared the space in a respectful manner and willingly and promptly helped with expenses and shared resources.
* Glenn and Jen of course for taking the time to take care of every email, inquiry, and seemingly remembering the name of each and every one of us. I mean, I know they're busy and yet still take the time to answer my simple, likely insignificant inquiries via FB or email is simply super human. Saints and Angels take on many different forms!!
* ALL the bands who take the time to share the experience with the fans and not treat ProgPower as just another 'gig'.
* Sweet Whitney D. the CenterStage barkeep who keeps a smile on my face and my tummy warm
* Lance and Nightmare records for giving me a CD free from their stash when it was pointed out that the jewelcase was damaged.
* The Artmore Hotel - for continually putting up with us and being able to for that matter. The courtyard was sparkling clean the next morning before sunrise...

Jeers:
* Sidewalk = epic fail
* Super 8 for moldy, bug spray ridden rooms
* The Artmore reservation system which crashed just as soon as it was MY turn to make my XIII reservation
* To the fans..rather participants...who continually think that by putting your swag bag in one chair somehow 'reserves' the 2 or 6 seats around it in a general admission venue.
* The CD/video system was quirky
* Center Stage for STILL not improving the 'house' lighting and/or stairs lighting

That's all for now...but overall, another wonderful reunion with my extended family and one of the most kickass festivals in the world!

Full blown dvd recording in HD with a 42 track pro-audio system in the back. Do you think we just hit the red record button in the studio and all is well? Do you think a band like Forbidden just plugs in and plays without caring about the patches? That mixing a band like Therion is the same as any 3-riff death metal band in a bar? No problem for you right?

Requests for up to 10 in-ear monitors to be mixed within 30 mins. bands requesting 30+ input lines.

No problem for you having to deal with band that bring their own engineers and reset the board, etc for every band right?

Five keyboards set up in 15 mins?

To have this number of bands playing on the same stage is a hell of a challenge. Between getting the stage ready, the board ready and everything else good to go the Crew must choose to breath or work, there is no time for both. Must say that any sound engineer on that level is prepared for such, but that doesn't mean it is easy and random things can go wrong. Just by reading 42 track, 10 in-ear monitor mix and 30+ inputs (there were way more things going on) I can assure to all that Glenn and the crew walked thru hell and came back without a scratch. I've worked with live sound and I am sure they did their very best. The "delay" didn't bother at all.

Holy Crap, where to start

Cheers

-Of course to Glenn and Jen on so many levels you guys out of the 8 years me and Kris have been coming, you blew the doors offa this year on so many levels.. From not giving up and bringing Sanctuary to us, and to replacing Doofus Evil with Forbidden(!) I finally got to see Gene Hoglan live and holy fuck that was amazing.

-Divinci's (sp) being open till 2am! Decent pizza but when you're that hungry its good to be able to get something hot that's cooked as opposed to hummus and pitas

-The Artmore being totally accommodating with an early check in after driving for 15 hours it makes a huge difference to not have to sit around and wait to check in.

-Seeing and hanging out with great friends again, too many to list, but all loved :)

-UV Cake.

-Nanners Click Here.

-Glenn for bringing back our Jersey Boys (Making me go into fangirl mode shame on you :) )

-#PPUSA Hashtag fucking rules.

-Labyrinth's Singer grabbing the orb so hard he could communicate with dolphins, that was freakin amazing

-Voyager for stealing (imo) the show.

Jeers

-Getting lectured by a vendor (not to be named) about why he doesn't have the new Anthrax album and that I should just go to Best Buy to buy it. Listen Buddy it came out on Tuesday, I was in a car all night Tuesday and arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday, Sorry that you only deal with "obscure and rare". I wanted to give you money, don't fucking lecture me about too "mainstream" I bet there were many people there who wanted the new Anthrax. (Which I think Zane brought but was sold out by the time I got to him)

-People bitching about the "thrash" element this year.. Get over yourselves, seeing mosh pits (which were controlled really well) at ProgPower warmed my old school metal heart.

-Not enough hours in the day to spend with friends

-The guy bootlegging in front of me and Nailz1000 that continued to tape on his cell phone as Glenn is walking up the stairs, what are you stupid? /facepalm

I'll prolly add more later, but I'm tired.
