I picked up the new Riverside disc(s) this weekend and am underwelmed. I miss the more metal Riverside.

I agree. But by the same token...still not a bad album by any stretch. Like Justin, I want the metal back on the next effort.

If Opeth's last album sounded even half this good...

It's interesting that you draw this comparison. Both discs are similar in a many respects. However, to my ear, they're also similar in the respect that the songs seem to go no where, and I just never feel engaged by the music. I found it a chore to listen to both Opeth's and Reiverside's most recent works. And in both cases, there just wasn't a single moment I felt like I needed to hear again. It's a shame. I have the utmost respect for both bands.
