Dark Tranquility - We Are The Void

There are still a few albums which came out this year that I haven't had a chance to listen to such as Therion, Seventh Wonder, Anthriel, etc. So my list could conceivably change.

01.Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
02.Silent Call - Greed
03.Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
04.Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
05.Labyrinth - Return to Heaven Denied II
06.Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
07.Allen/Lande - The Showdown
08.Wuthering Heights - Salt
09.Vanden Plas - The Seraphic Clockwork
10.Creation's End - A New Beginning.

I heard over 70 albums this year, and could definitely make a top 25 in which I love every album. A bunch of honorable mentions:
-Powerworld - Human Parasite
-Avantasia - Angel of Babylon
-Dreyelands - Rooms of Revelation
-Sinbreed - When Worlds Collide
-White Wizzard - Over the Top
-Anthriel - The Pathway
-Star One - Victims of the Modern Age
-Accept - Blood of the Nations
-Triosphere - The Road Less Traveled
-Royal Hunt - X

1. Helloween - "7 Sinners"
2. Slough Feg - "The Animal Spirit"
3. Grave Digger - "The Clans Will Rise Again"
4. Angra - "Aqua"
5. Zuul - "Out of Time"
6. Therion - "Sitra Ahra"
7. Axevyper - S/T
8. Skelator - "Death to All Nations"
9. Dawnbringer - "Nucleus"
10. Gamma Ray - "To The Metal"

some that almost made it were the new Atlantean Kodex, Freedom Call, White Wizzard, and the new Shaaman.

I'm gonna post my list with an asterisk at the end since I'm still listening to two albums (and they deserve a fair chance).

Top 10 albums, in order:

1. TesseracT - Concealing Fate EP (I know this isn't a full album, but for some reason this album won't leave my car!)
2. Kingcrow - Phlegethon
3. Alcest - Écailles De Lune
4. Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned
5. Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
6. Mar De Grises - Streams Inwards
7. James LaBrie - Static Impulse
8. Division By Zero - Independent Harmony
9. Barren Earth - Curse Of The Red River
10. Orphaned Land - The Neverending Way Of ORwarriOR

I would've preferred a top 6 list since the last four are only marginally better than many other albums. The first 6 are in a class of their own!

On another note, I think the songs "Valkyries" by Blind Guardian and "Release" by Rosetta should get honorable mentions. The songs themselves are AMAZING, but the overall albums didn't quite make my top 10 list.

*Note: this post might change if the new Engel or Agalloch albums best the Orphaned Land album...

Interesting... we made it to Post 31 before someone case a vote for Kamelot. Not sure if that says more about the new album or the changing tastes of the forum.

Not sure how my list will shake out, but the following seemed destined for high marks...

High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
Ihsahn - After

Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence

Way too early for me to make a definitive top 10 list. I like over 160 releases this year. I will give it a very tentative shot though.

These top 5, in this order, are a pretty sure bet:

1. Atheist - Jupiter / complex death
2. Son of Aurelius - The Farthest Reaches / complex death
3. Arsis - Starve for the Devil / thrashy death
4. Taking Dawn - Time to Burn / hair metal
5. Disturbed - Asylum / mainstream metal

Making a prediction today, these would round out my top 10:

6. Forbidden - Omega Wave / thrash
7. Canobliss - Man Is the Enemy / mainstream metal
8. The Crinn - Dreaming Saturn / complex noisecore
9. Soreption - Deterioration of Minds / death metal
10. Helstar - Glory of Chaos / American power metal

Others that will likely rank highly:

A Tortured Soul - Lucifer's Fate / traditional metal
All That Remains - For We Are Many / metalcore
Alter Bridge - AB III / mainstream metal
Angelus Apatrida - Clockwork / thrash
Anihilated - Scorched Earth Policy / thrash
Antithesis - Dreaming Reality / American power metal
Bonded by Blood - Exiled to Earth / thrash
Crystalic - Persistence / thrashy death
Dååth - s/t / thrashy death
Diskreet - Engage the Mechanicality / complex death

Imbalance - Period Three Implies Chaos / thrash

Ratt - Infestation / hair metal
Vindicator - The Antique Witcheries / thrash

Canceling the tour killed any buzz that was going on for the album.
I haven't seen that album talked about anywhere.
Had they toured, it would have been discussed more.

I haven't heard the album, but I do like their darker direction they took with Ghost Opera. There were just a lot more higher priority releases for me, that this is very low on my list of discs I still want to get. So much so, that I probably won't bother unless I get it in a trade.

Also, you are right. There seems to be a major change in tastes, in looking at folks lists.

I found 15 albums that I LOVE this year - the last 4 might even end up placing in top 10, but I just haven't spent enough time with them yet to be able to tell if they'll be there or not.

I purposely decided to omit any Intromental bands, simply because I'm extremely biased, and besides all of the bands would be yelling at me for placing some other band higher than them, haha.

1. Spiritual Beggars – Return To Zero
2. Pain Of Salvation – Road Salt, Part I
3. Black Country Communion – Black Country Communion
4. Shaolin Death Cult – Five Deadly Venoms
5. Kamelot – Poetry For The Poisoned
6. Ihsahn – After
7. Orphaned Land – The Neverending Way Of ORwarriOR*
8. Periphery – Periphery
9. Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
10. Pretty Maids - Pandemonium
11. Triptykon – Eparistera Daimones
12. The Shadow Theory – Behind The Black Veil
13. Mr. Big – What If …
14. Star One – Victims Of The Modern Age
15. King’s X – Live Love In London

* Yeah, I did also include this on my 2009 list as I got it in December that year - not bad being able to put it on the list two years in a row ;)

Pulled the Kamelot disc out after a month of not listening to it (only because I finally got the Manimal and loved it), and am enjoying it even more (and I liked it to start).
