This has to be by far the one point in this thread that I disagree with the most. The lineup is far from "homogeneous".

In recent years we'd had bands like Amorphis, Mercenary, Zero Hour, etc to mix it up a bit. I was hoping at least one must-see band like that would be announced for next year (Mercenary again? Textures? Darkane?), but oh well.

I guess it all depends on how you define those terms. I don't consider Mercenary or Zero Hour to be "mixing it up"... they're pretty well in-line with the general concept of ProgPower. Paradox and Oceans of Sadness are much more likely to be outside of the average PPUSA attendee's "comfort zone", IMO. As for "must-see" bands... that's entirely a matter of personal opinion, isn't it?

but along those lines I'd rather have a band like Memory Garden. Just sayin'.

I'm with you there. However, do you really expect a doom band to go over well at a high-energy show like PPUSA? Even a more up-tempo doom band like MG? I'd much rather see them play Chicago Powerfest or something, where they'd be properly appreciated.

MG I think would really connect with the power metal fans, actually...like pretty much blow them away, I think, but you're probably right.

Keep in mind that Oceans of Sadness is doom metal (as stated on their own website but I guess more alternative metal really) and most everyone I talked to is extremely excited about them.

(Heck, I saw tons of Solitude Aeturnus in the vendor room this weekend as well...)
 
I've given all the bands that I didn't know a listen. For those I'm familiar with, I gave them a re-listen. I've come to the conclusion that although I prefer to LISTEN to progressive music more than power by a large margin (quality of the lyrical content has a LOT to do with this as I've developed almost an allergic reaction to the words battle, steel, dragons, kingdoms etc etc ad nauseum), I love to WATCH power metal bands perform regardless of the lyrics. The band and the audience engages in an exchange of energy that cannot be conveyed through recorded medium.

The point I'm getting at is, next year is going to be an amazingly FUN experience if you're willing to set aside your expectations and go where the performers take you.

That's just me though. Consequently I'm pretty easy to please.

Yup.....but with PPUSA, especially next year, power-metal fans get a BIG dose of power in one place, which should encourage them to travel to the fest.

This is Glenn's Waterloo....a lot like PPUSA III. After PPUSA II didn't sell out by a long shot (new venue, more prog than power, etc.), he needed to put asses in seats. Result: a power-heavy lineup, that should do well.

I'm not a power-metal fan m'self, but a lot of the putative power bands next year -- Nocturnal Rites, Kamelot, Tarot -- are bands that I like, so I'm pleased with the lineup. I'll have some homework to do on some others. As for Tyr.... :kickass:
 
I've certainly panned the lineups a few times, so I certainly won't slag people who aren't into this years' lineup. But this is right up my alley. As long as there aren't serious visa problems forcing major lineup changes, I'll be there.

The government needs to get its shit together. What happened this year was an atrocity, and it happened at PPVIII at the last minute too, didn't it, with Vanden Plas having to cancel and Primal fear almost getting halted at the airport?

I hope you can make it, dude! I'd love to see both Bloodbound and Anubis Gate in the Showcase, with no cancellations or visa issues whatsoever. The PPUSA XI roster as it stands right now is a 10/10!:worship:rock::kickass:

I have one thing to say - Glen, you are a god! It's funny, because I was sitting with my friends on Friday and we were talking about who could possibly be in the lineup for next year. And I said to them "I dunno, but if Seventh Wonder is there, I don't care if every other band is one I know and hate, I'm there!" And then he gets Seventh Wonder! I thought I'd NEVER see them live! Also am looking forward to DGM and Illusion Suite.
 
I'm psyched with Kamelot, Tarot, and Delain. Tarot alone would get me there, if I was on the fence. Not on the fence.

Sadly, the date is the WORST week of the year for me. State law in Michigan is that classes can't start before Labor Day. I work, as staff, in a department and there is a policy within departments of no vacation time the first week of classes.

That said, my boss let me out a whopping 3 hours early on Friday this year... and I've got a hair less than 12 months to try and convince her I neeeeeeeed all of Friday next year. Otherwise, probably 3 hours and in time for the middle section of Friday night's roster.

But. I'm pleased and I look forward to listening to all the bands I don't know (which, er, is most) and seeing which might be my Sabataon for PPXI!
 
Nocturnal Rites is my best band forever!! I have to fly to Atlanta from Japan next year again! I couldn't believe to see this announcement after Crimson Glory!!:kickass:

This year's PPU(my first PPU!) was awesome, however next year's PPU will be great more for me.
 
Will Kamelot do anything special for this performance? I just find it odd to see them there considering they'll probably tour the US around the same time. Any news/rumors/guesses?

Prog Power III (the one with Blind Guardian and Edguy right?) did well because it was the first time those bands ever played the US, but now that most of these bands are touring their appeal has worn thin. I fail to see how this show is going to be a guaranteed sell out, regardless of my personal opinion of the bands. Kamelot is indeed a big draw, but this festival depends on people flying out from outside. If Kamelot does a tour around the fest, people will be less inclined to fly out for this gig. Most of these bands would draw 15-30 people tops and Hammerfall brings in like 150-200 on a good day (I'd even wager less because their buzz has died down considerably since the last US tour).

I'm also not attacking the festival, cause at this point the name is such that people will go no matter who is playing, but I just don't understand how people think this is a guaranteed sell out.

Hi, PARADOX is a trash band from 80's a very very good one, this band do a lot of great solos and tempo changes in their songs, last album Electrify is great.

I believe and hope that next year will be a sellout; if it doesn't - hey, more breathing space and elbow room for me :)
Best lineup since III, in my opinion
