Cheers and Jeers Thread

really? first time i ever went to a bar (which was in Boston), my friends and i didn't know you were supposta tip as you went, and after the first round of drinks, we were completely ignored by the bartenders, until i finally managed to ask one of them for a round of shots and was told, "we don't serve people who don't tip"

Hehe, I'm not from Boston originally, I just moved there. Sorry for the confusion. I am English - not very much tipping done over there.

Yeah, that bartender was a bitch. I figured after giving her a $4-5 tip for 2-3 drinks TWICE she'd be better, but nope. I started waiting for the other guy... which wasn't hard since she ignored me most of the time. :p

I had so many complaints about her and demanding tips that I had the venue manager crack down on her Saturday before the doors opened. I'd say that didn't help her mood that night. :heh:

Cheers:

To ConnieOH and her husband Jerry for giving up a spot on the rail so that I could stand in front to watch Sonata. (I know Kyle appreciated it as well) And for a great weekend spent hanging out all weekend (and the gin and tonic!)
To the Residence for picking up groceries for us, that rocks!
To all of the bands. You worked your asses off, and I sure appreciated all of the ones I got to see!
To all of my friends I got to see this year after a two year gap. Man I missed you guys!
To Ken for having a great range of CDs available. I sure got everything I wanted. And to Zane for sweeping up the spare cash I had available by offering up $10 CDs on Saturday night. That rocked. I got almost everything I wanted this weekend.

Jeers:

To the Residence for sending us Diet Coke when we wanted Diet Pepsi at the grocery store.

But really, it was almost a perfect weekend! Thanks Glenn!

Cheers:

- First and foremost, Glenn and crew for making it all happen! What you do is such a gift to so many! :kickass:
- Halcyon Way for kicking off the showcase in style, especially under less than perfect circumstances!
- Redemption for *redeeming* what IMO was a very slow start to Fri. night. Fantastic performance! I was totally blown away! :kickass:
- Pagan's Mind (see above)
- After Forever, and especially Floor Jansen, for an unbelievably stellar performance! Thank you, Floor, for showing the world that frontwomen can be more than just a pretty face in a corset. Look forward to hearing those pipes again in Cleveland next week! :kickass:
- Shaye for your warm hospitality and just being a gem of a person! *hugs*
- Urban also for your warm hospitality and great conversation! Thanks for stepping up to the mic with me Wed. Had a blast! *hugs*
- All the peeps at karaoke Wed. night who made me feel.. hmm.. I don't know if "loved" is the right word.. fearful for the life of the DJ if I didn't sing "just one more" QR tune. I hope you all enjoyed! :)
- The 30+ folks who asked the immortal question, "When will the Krone album be out?" Thanks for crackin' that whip!
- Finally, Christina, Sean, Colleen, Teri, and everybody else I had the pleasure of seeing this year. There's just never enough time! You all rock! :kickass:

Jeers:

- THE SMOKE. Oh my god, I cannot stress this enough. Especially with so many singers in attendance, I cannot believe that smoking was tolerated ANYWHERE at the event. There was nowhere to even escape from it! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do something to better enforce the non-smoking policy at future events!
- The overall performances. Though there were certainly some shining moments, I felt that about 50% of the performances were weaker than they should have been for an event of this caliber. Granted, we got reeeally spoiled last year, but still. I hope the bands really step it up next year.
- Uhm.. the "exotic dancer". Why?
- The multitude of technical problems. Sure, it happens. But, it seemed to happen more than it should have and was not quickly remedied.
- This is a tiny jeer, but I gotta throw it in there: no diversity in the music that was played between sets. Don't get me wrong – I love Jorn, but I think I heard "Cold Sweat" at least a dozen times over.

I think that's it. Overall, another very enjoyable year. Already looking forward to next year and (thank you, Glenn) ELVENKING!!

Oh, how could I have forgotten? A gigantic CHEER to you for actually getting my husband up to sing! You guys both sounded great. Looking forward to some collaboration. :D :D :D

(And lunch was cool, too--glad we finally got to do that!)

You would have heard it less if some asshole wouldn't have stolen all of my cds I had created for the overhead PA off the mixing board on Friday night.

Your technical complaint has been addressed in a seperate thread that you evidently did not see.

lol?

are you blind!?!

every band (minus VS imo) rocked and slayed as good as I expected, only band that was a little lower was SA imo

It seemed there was a problem with some sticky fingers. Apparantly a lot of the free bags were also being grabbed. Why people were stealing burned CDs and free samplers is beyond me. "z0mg! I have a mix CD that Glenn made personally!"

I have only cheers for a great weekend. The bands were so impressive. I want give a cheer to Dave from Charleston, SC. Not only is he protecting our freedom by serving proudly in the United States Air Force, he made it a family affair. He brought his teenage son with him. Woot Woot!

Hey everybody, this is my first post on the forum but this was my fourth ProgPower, and even though it's so hard to top your first time this year's was at least a tie :headbang:

Cheers:
- Freak Kitchen for putting on such a great show for the showcase... I'm a huge VP fan and was really bummed when I heard the news, and I'd actually heard FK before but wasn't really diggin it... but seeing these guys live has totally changed my opinion!
- Threshold/Damien! I'm a big DW fan from the Ayeron/Star One/etc projects, one of my favorite vocalists... and I had no idea he was back in Threshold! Man what an awesome surprise that was, that alone cancelled out the VP disappointment. Plus it turned out he was staying in the hotel room across the hall from us -- Damien Wilson had a beer with us in our room, how can you top that?! :)
- Pagan's Mind put on another fantastic show, I was already a fan of these guys when they came the first time and they were even better this time around. Favorite guitarist of the night. Caught a drum head from the all-star jam and got everyone in the band to sign it (they were in our hotel too)... and their rendition of King Diamond's Welcome Home was another festival highlight for me :)
- Redemption: saw these guys at their first PP appearance as well, liked them but wasn't blown away... but this year really did it for me, fantastic set, went straight to the merch area and bought their latest CD :)
- After Forever: WOW. And again. WOW! What an amazing climax to the show... been fans of Floor and Joost for a long time, and thought the AF albums were 'pretty good'... holy shit nothing can compare to the power these guys have on stage. Enjoyed every millisecond of their set. And I'm so excited too that my band will be opening for them in Ottawa next week!!
- Staff at the Courtyard by Marriott: easily the best stay I've had out of the 4 years... great location and lots of star-gazing :)

Jeers:
- Where was our favourite bar tender?! :(
- The bar running out of food on Friday night :(
- Finally getting the world famous ProgPower Chicken Fingers on Saturday night and realizing they weren't worth the trouble anymore :(
- All-Star jam was a little long in the tooth for me, after being on the floor since before AF I was hurtin by 3am :)

It was great seeing lots of old friends and making lots of new ones too... shout out to Amanda, Julien, Rich, Curufin, Terri and Jeff, the rest of the TEOF gang, BJ and Aleyna, Chris from Freak Kitchen, Damien Wilson(!!!) and the Pagan's Mind boyz!

Cheers to:

Glenn, Cindy, and Crew for throwing one hell of a party! Thanks for inviting us. :kickass:

ALL of the bands, especially those who stepped up to make the Showcase such a memorable show – despite the unfortunate circumstances.

The musicians who weren’t officially part of the festival, but came to hang out anyway (and even participate).

Pagan’s Mind for giving us an amazing performance on Friday, PLUS learning all of the songs for the All-Star Jam. :worship:

All the fans who attended – I love my friends and family here, but it’s a rare treat for me to hang out with folks who GET what good music is all about.

The forum nametags. (But JEERS to me for never finding them…)

Tarathur for OWNING Queensryche at Karaoke Night! Also, all of the other folks who had the nerve and talent to participate. (I lacked both.)

The video introducing the bands confirmed for next year. I have to admit that after the crowd chant of “GLENN’S FUCKED UP! GLENN’S FUCKED UP!” I wondered if he would even *remember* the line-up. I should have known that he would be three steps ahead of me.

Jeers to:

Smoking in the lobby. (Yes, I know this horse has 3 feet in the grave and the fourth is slipping on a banana peel).

Detroit Customs Agents. (Yep, this one’s fading fast as well).

US Airways for printing my FLIGHT Number (35) in the box on my boarding pass where the GATE was supposed to be. I therefore headed to Concourse B in search of Gate 35, which was NOT where I was supposed to be. (But CHEERS to my incoming flight arriving on time, so I didn’t miss the Oliva show on Wednesday.)

The cab company that took me to the airport -- for buying old cabs from New York and not bothering to take down the map of Manhattan from the back seat or the sticker from the NY Transportation Commission stating that all trips from JFK to Manhattan were a flat $45. I had a moment of total disorientation where I wondered what the HELL was in those bottled waters I drank on Saturday. :zombie:

Cheers:
1) Primal Fear-one of the best concerts I've ever seen!!
2) Pagan's Mind
3) Sonata Arctica
4) Firewind
5) Threshold
6) Raintime
7) The vendor who priced all his CD's at $10.00

Jeers:
1) The house sound guy-holy crap!!!
2) Redemption- it is sad to see how Ray has lost his voice. His case is worst than Tate's
3) All the technical problems throughout the weekend
4) The disorganization at the time of opening the vendor area, and at the time of letting the Gold Bagers in

That's all!! :) for now.....

Cheers:

To a festival where I truly enjoyed the acts I watched/sat through. I felt it was a good mix of stuff this year - jmho!

Jeers: To whoever was in the room next to mine on the third floor of the Granada (no, not Alicia and Kim - this was the dude on the other side of me) that liked taking early morning showers and singing at the top of his lungs. I can admit the first time he woke me up I actually giggled out loud, now for the following days that got a little annoying. At least sleep in a little longer dude - even if it's just an hour!

Cheers:
  • Everyone that pitches in to make this fest work (promoter, sponsors, all that work behind the scenes) – I have been to a lot of fests in my time – Milwaukee, New England, Murderfest, etc. and this one by far runs the smoothest of any of them.
  • Steph – for putting up with my drunk *ss and giving me a place to crash.
  • James, Kathy, Kittybeast, Ron and Sean for also offering to let me crash at their places – I could not ask for better friends.
  • Metal, Hoyt and Patrick for the sense of humor on Saturday.
  • Shaye for lending me her husband not only to fall to sleep in chair on, but also cheers to him for putting up with me and my craziness during Megadeth and King Diamond, I am not sure if he was amused or scared.
  • Greg and Paula (coolest couple ever), Grandpa Metal, Stan (finally got to meet you!), my buddy Chuck from Birmingham, and of course Shannon and Mike!
  • Harumi and Bryant – her for being the biggest saint that ever lived taking care of Bryant!
  • Boob for being cool and having lunch with me, Denney and Steph.
  • The bartenders in Vinyl – Jaime rocks!
  • Kittybeast again for the pictures for Whisperer – I think he will be very pleased.
  • Doug the mailman (chickenkiller to some) – it was fun hanging with you – we will hang out more in the future – finally met your wife and son too – poor them.
  • Britt – just for hitting on every girl when you are drunk – we all love you anyways… J
  • Definitely all of the bands that played – especially Primal Fear, Raintime, Freak Kitchen and Firewind. And of course Halcyon Way for stepping up to the plate.
  • Zane from HW for hanging out with me and keeping me company – and me later having the pleasure to meet his beautiful wife.
  • Tess and Annie for the laughs in Vinyl – we were all just on a roll there.

Jeers:
  • No Mike the Cop and no Whisperer – was not the same without those two boys.
  • My drunken stupor Friday night in which I obviously left Steph’s room and took a walk yet I don’t know where I went….
  • The Madison Grill for not only having bad service but losing my credit card after charging it.
  • The bartenders at Center Stage – I can’t tell you how many times I got mad and walked off from the girl at the right and the Asian girl.
  • There were a few that were so nice that I ran into but I don’t know names even from years past – I am sorry for that – I am an idiot.
