Who would you have booked for PPX if Glenn gave you the power????

I'd love to talk to Dee Snider again. He's one entertaining dude.

Definitely -- gotta love the guy for going to Washington in the mid-80s to kick ass and take names! :headbang: I saw VHC 2 years ago in Vegas, and they ROCKED.

I keep hoping they will do some more live dates...but I guess the scheduling is tough with Halloween so close to Mark Wood's "TSO Season".

Haha, I love mjtilley's idea of a headliner (Dream Theater is and will probably always be my favorite band of all time), but I think Dream Theater is too big to ever be at Prog Power, unfortunately. I was very sad that Symphony X didn't make the list - I think they should've been the headliner for the "returning heroes" night - after all, they would be a returning hero, and Fates Warning has never been at Prog Power so why are they on that night? They should've been the Friday night headliner in my opinion. Other bands I would've loved to see on the friday lineup as new blood:
Seventh Wonder
Planet X
Serenity (was very sad they canceled for Prog Power IX)
Darkwater
Ark (love rushzil2112's reunion idea) or Masterplan (with Jorn, not the new guy)

Symphony X has had a few recent US tours with one coming up this month and November and will likely have another before PPX. I like that the returning heroes are not bands that have repeatedly been touring or played at half of the PPs (*cough*evergrey*cough*). Hell, Symphony X played at my local venue in July which I can assure you rarely ever happens with bands in this genre.
As for the headliner not being a returning hero, it makes sense. Anyone really worth giving a headliner spot to has either been touring the US a lot (Kamelot, Nightwish, SX, Edguy, etc), been to enough PPs where they honestly don't need to play again, or not possible to get. Daniel from Pain of Salvation (to the delight of many here) is against the recent US policy of fingerprinting foreign visitors so until he gets over that we won't see them for some time. Therion was not going to happen without some sort of huge miracle after the last two bad US tours and that's not even considering the fact that the band has disappointingly drawn pitiful numbers in the US outside of a few cities so almost might not be considered headliner worthy. And we've already got two returning bands from that PP. If anything, I'd say toss Matos on that night and he could be an unofficial returnee since Angra played PP twice (even if he wasn't the singer then).

As for Jorn and any band involving him. I'm amazed Glenn got Royal Hunt with his past reservations. I'd be absolutely floored if we ever see Jorn on the PP stage any time in the near future. Also, Ark wouldn't be new blood. They played PPII.

And I'll be one of the few to say... Thank god for no Savatage. It may have been said jokingly by someone but we already had the Savatage cover band play this year.

I'm amazed how people's desired list for PP-X' is now different from their 'What I would have done'.

I think a 'what I would have done' is a little crappy of a post/thread just after a lineup is announced--nonetheless on the forum's own board. Especially concerning its a lie, since you aren't actually putting your money on the line. Its not a 'fantasy' thread. Its a 'I would have done this because I know better.' I think that's where Hoyt's coming from. I really don't think that Glenn makes a 'fantasy list' and goes with that. He comes up with a list/roster based on a mix of preferences and business decisions. Nonetheless, that you don't have to deal with bands flat out telling you 'can't do' 'not interested' '(no reply at all)' 'We want $20,000 for an opening slot indeed!' 'well we'd like to... but I'm trying to get my wife susy pregnant, and my sperm count is low, so I'm not sure when it might happen over the next few months and if that will conflict, do you mind if we wait until we get a plus sign to confirm?'

I realize most people don't mean to be disrespectful and for most this ends up being a 'top 12.'

p.s. Once you've had a band ask you for a lot of money to show up + hotels, and no venue wants to hold them because everybody -but- the band/management/booking agency knows they won't draw... well you'll get some flavor for what this is like. You'll get even more taste when the band either A) doesn't promote their own show, or B) decides to cancel on you. Or when you've set up the show but the band has to cancel because other promoters promised more than they could deliver causing stops to be cancelled causing the tour to no longer be remotely profitable. Oh, and you were planning on paying everything based on a loan.

-end rant-

I like sharing my dream bands to see live(whether it be at progpower or not) and see others dream lists because it gives me something to work off of to check out bands I haven't yet checked out. Lists and topics like this increase peoples wants to check out other bands that get repeatedly posted if they don't already know or are familiar with, so I just see it as a promotional tool for yours and others favorite bands. I love progpower X's line-up through and through and I don't think anybody is really saying anything to Glenn and his choices; at least I know I haven't, but I think this topic is for people who wish they had the connections, know-how, experience, and everything that goes into putting together a festival. I know i don't have any connections, no experience, no money to back it up and am an unknown so getting sponsors would be extremely difficult, but can't I at least dream of who I would try to book if I had the resources to make a show happen of all my favorite artists. If somebody loves Dream Theater(even though they tour and such) shouldn't they want them at progpower, mainly because of the environment and the whole idea of hanging out with them all weekend and also the idea of a special set. If you don't like these forum topics, then I have something to say to you, don't click on the topic, and let everyone else who does click on them and enjoy them and talk with others who also enjoy the topic. There is always somebody trying to spoil topics when I am in here just trying to have fun talking with others. This topic and forum is not our jobs but a place to come and talk about stuff, whether it be fucking retarded or something on a serious note, and we are all going to have our opinions, and many of them strong opinions, but that is what makes it fun, unless people are just flat out bitching about the topic itself.

Well, there's posting "who you would have booked" and then there's posting Dream Theater, Avantasia, Ayreon, Savatage for the showcase (seriously?) and a bunch of 100% growl death metal bands. One should actually bring up legitimate possibilities and the other comes up with a list 10x Glenn's budget with some extremely out of place bands that already have their own US fests and tours and wouldn't even warrant being an oddball since there is honestly nothing actually oddball about them. There's already plenty of "dream list" threads every year and it's just the fact that this thread title makes absolutely no sense with what is actually posted. Even in guess threads I usually toss in a few guesses for bands I don't really like but figure may get a spot because I know my tastes don't really go hand in hand with many of the power metal devotees who are considered the majority.
There's a reason Glenn does what he does. A few years ago we had people saying Within Temptation would only get a 1 or 2 slot until Glenn said that if he was able to book them (like he had tried for several years and gotten no responses), they would be the biggest selling act he had ever gotten at that time. And we've already had people say that Matos' popularity is nothing compared to Jorn's in another thread which Glenn quickly squashed.

Everybody just needs to relax. It's all good.

I've been second guessed from Day 1 and will be bitched at until I retire this event. If I'm going to take the praise from the majority, I can handle some critiques from the minority. Some of those type of posts are valid and have led me down certain paths over the years. Some of those are complete and utter horseshit from people that are simply clueless and that is ok. This forum probably has more armchair quaterbacks than any other forum combined and that's cool. It means people are passionate about the product. When the masses start speaking with their wallets and stop coming, then I will know I made the wrong decision. So far...so good.

As pointed out, there are a multitude of factors that go into my roster selection:

availability (i.e. Tarot & Nocturnal Rites are not available)
buzz/reviews
new material
budget
business favors
how the style fits in the overall roster
gut feeling
personal desire

Just because I have a handful of people on this forum being vocal for a band, doesn't mean they will be booked. If I went by what this forum said all the time, this festival would have crashed and burned a long time ago. There will be other opportunities down the road.

That's the cold reality of how you book a festival in the real world. If you want Utopian Fest 2009, book it. I'll be there to support you.

A Lower Deep for ProgPower XI

availability - check (anywhere, anytime)
buzz/reviews - check (see reviews thread)
new material - check
budget - check (we're cheaper than a crack whore)
business favors - (can we do sexual favors instead?)
how the style fits the overall roster - check (we're alittle bit prog we're alittle bit power)
gut feeling - check (or could have been the tacos)
personal desire - check (see sexual favors above)

UtopiaFest!
Yes!
We might even be able to bring some folks back from the dead so that we can ensure that everyone gets to see their favorite bands in their original entirety!!
I'm sick of the lists too...only because they're NEVER realistic, and so many people just end up mentioning the same bands over and over.
A suggestion or two is understandable.
Mentioning a band you would like to see someday is fine.
Myself personally, I think Crimson Glory should play, obviously.
Maybe they will one of these years.
(Midnight did a pretty nice job of making sure he never sets foot on ProgPower turf again, but that's neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things since he hasn't sang for Crimson in any permanent sense for years.)
But I don't make lists of a million bands that will never play PPUSA every single year over and over and over.
It's a waste of time, IMHO.

Oh, and Hoyt's ranting made me moist. :heh:

I've seen a few people mention Paradox here.

One of the most underrated bands ever. They NEVER get the credit they deserve.

and the work that Charly Steinhauer did with Dawnrider was amazing too.

My lists are always a little heavy as I like the heavier vocals-

My bands would be:

  1. Mercenary
  2. Adagio
  3. Freak Kitchen
  4. Circus Maximus
  5. Savatage
  6. Children of Bodom
  7. Therion
  8. Into Eternity
  9. Beyond Twilight

I'm sure I'll add others.

All kidding aside- Next year for the Showcase: Mercenary, Elvenking and Freak Kitchen. Talk about tearing the freaking house down....
